Hull KR centre Peta Hiku has been among Super League’s best in 2025 and he’s spoken about his future with the club, as well as the prospect of claiming a clean sweep in silverware in 2025.
The Robins are on for the treble with the Challenge Cup already in the bag and their odds shortening into joint-favourites for the Grand Final. They’re also already four points clear in the race for the League Leaders Shield, however, there is a fourth trophy that Hiku could collect.
That’s the Pacific Championship trophy with New Zealand set to compete against Tonga and Samoa this year, given that holders Australia are facing England in the Ashes.
Hiku participated in the competition last year as he became the first Super League player to be called up for New Zealand since Tommy Leuluai got the nod in 2017, and he’s made himself available for the call once again.
“I’d love to be a part of it,” the centre said when asked about the prospect of playing in the end-of-season internationals.
“If I ever got the call again then there’s no doubt I would want to be a part of that, but I’m not going to hold my breath to it.”
Hull KR star gives contract verdict as love for rugby league outlined
Hiku, who will turn 33 in December, admitted that whilst there’s plenty of miles in his legs, he would never turn down the chance to play for his country.
He explained: “Obviously, the legs are getting a bit old but it’d be awesome to be a part of. If they needed anyone, I’d be the first to put my hand up. If they gave me a call, I’d love to be a part of that.
“Putting the black jersey on, you never know when your last time is. Obviously, I got to do it in the last year, so, yeah, it’d be awesome to do it again.
“Putting that black jersey on is probably one of the easiest things you could probably get up and want to get for the game.”
On the suggestion he could do a domestic treble and earn silverware with his nation, he pumped the breaks: “You’re dreaming about stuff like that and you’d love to be a part of those kinds of things but I’d love to just take one thing at a time at the moment.”
Having accepted that his ‘legs are getting a bit old’, Hiku also spoke about the prospect of a new contract. Currently, he’s tied down until the end of the 2026 season which would men any deal for 2027 would be for a 34-year-old Hiku.
The Hull KR man responded: “I haven’t really thought about it, but someone asked me the question if I would go on, and I said, ‘Well, the way my body’s been holding up, if it keeps holding up like this, I’d love to keep playing’.
“Obviously, it’s a big season. Like I’ve said, if your body can hold up over 27 to 30 games a year, and I’m still feeling all right then yeah, I’d love to keep going.
“At the moment, still contracted and I’ve got a job here at the moment to do.”
Talking about what’s driving him at the moment as he sets about an exceptional campaign that’s seen him register 15 tries of assists in just 14 games, he spoke about his desire to win and love for the sport.
The 32-year-old said: “I like giving back to the game for what the game has done for me. I still enjoy playing rugby league and I suppose that’s probably one of the biggest things.
“Also within me, no matter how small or big a situation is, I don’t like losing. Whether it’s a game of heads or tails, I’d be filthy if I lost, so it’s about having the love behind it and wanting to win.”
