Hull KR boss predicts more to come from “extremely dangerous” star who shone v Hull FC

Hull KR boss Willie Peters doing an interview

Hull KR head coach reckons there could be yet more to come from French full-back Arthur Mourgue once he and his partner fully settle following his move from Catalans Dragons.

Peters has also iterated his belief that Mourgue’s best position is full-back despite the former Catalans man’s capability to play in the halves, something he has done on multiple occasions.

Hull KR had signed Mourgue for the 2026 season but an opportunity came to bring him in early with Catalans initiating that deal. Once the Robins did right by Niall Evalds and facilitated his move to Huddersfield, the pieces fell into place and the deal was done.

So far, it’s proven to be a very savvy deal with Mourgue earning Man of the Match against Hull FC this past weekend and also performing well against both Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants, racking up two tries, one assist, and twelve goals, all whilst averaging 140 metres per game.

“It seems like he’s been here longer than what he has,” was Peters’ assessment when asked about the 25-year-old when speaking to media to preview Friday’s game against Leeds Rhinos.

Hull KR boss outlines signing’s best attribute

Mourgue is set to start at full-back against Leeds Rhinos as the Robins aim to extend their lead atop Super League with Peters noting how impressed he has been so far, whilst suggesting even more levels could come.

The Hull KR head coach said: “He’s invested a lot into his game. He certainly cares about his performance in regards to his prep and then what his review looks like. He’s settled in really well.

“He’s a confident lad, mid-20s now and it’s a big step to come over to another country and settle in as quickly as what he has to credit to him. His partner’s on her way over as well so once she settles, I’m sure he’ll settle even more. That’s the most important part now, which is just making sure his partner settles.”

Peters attributed Hull KR’s current former Catalans contingent, namely 2025 recruits Tom Davies and Micky McIlorum, as well as Tyrone May as being potential reasons for why Mourgue has settled so well.

He explained: “There’s a few players that he played with over in Catalans which helped but look I think most rugby league environments there are good people involved. There’s not a lot of, I can’t use that word here, but there’s a lot of good people in rugby league.”

The Australian also underlined full-back to be Mourgue’s best position as he spoke on his admiration of the 25-year-old, stating: “I’ve been a fan of him for a while, even when I first come over. He causes a fair few problems every time he’s played. He’s a handy goal kicker, there’s a lot to like about his game.

“He sort of got chopped and changed a little bit. He was in the halves but I certainly believe he’s more of a full-back. His best attribute is his running game. When he’s running the football, he’s extremely dangerous.”

“Can’t really teach that” – Arthur Mourgue’s bravery praised by Peters

Hull FC saw just how dangerous Mourgue was as he scored the try that ‘changed the game’ according to Peters, not after taking a huge whack which saw Cade Cust sent off – something which showed Peters more than hours of reviewing game tape could,

On his full-back’s Hull derby performance and that Cust high tackle, Peters said: “For him to be able to come back on the field and change the game, it was a key moment in the game just before half-time. I admire him because like you say, he’s not a big fella, he’s only a small guy but he’s very tough. You can’t really teach that, it’s either in you or it’s not.

“Wigan, I thought, put a little bit on him the week before, I thought he handled that and then obviously FC did a similar job on the weekend. The way he responded from that that collision, there’s some players that probably would have gone the other way. Some players might not have wanted to come back on the field, some players would have sort of just taken a backward seat where he wanted to front up, he wanted to get the ball in his hands and he wanted to be involved which is a really good sign.”
