Pundit Jon Wilkin has labelled Hull KR star Mikey Lewis as “world class” and explained what Willie Peters has done to unlock those levels of performance.
Lewis has gone from strength to strength under Willie Peters, moving from a player who could produce moments of magic to one who now runs the Hull KR attack and regularly produces moments of magic.
One of the most recent examples was the Man of Steel’s performance against Leeds Rhinos with Lewis nailing a 40/20 to swing the momentum and then scoring the go-ahead try out of nothing.
Hull KR would win that game and they won again on Saturday at Magic Weekend with Lewis grabbing two more assists in a 54-0 win over Salford Red Devils and the pre-match analysis of the 23-year-old saw him labelled ‘world class’ by Jon Wilkin.
“He’s properly world class” – Hull KR star earns plaudits
Speaking ahead of the game against Salford, both Jon Wilkin and Jamie Jones-Buchanan quickly assessed that the Red Devils had little to no chance given their current state of affairs and the fact Hull KR lead Super League.
KR only maintained their grip atop Super League thanks to that win over Leeds Rhinos and Jones-Buchanan hailed Lewis’ final 15 minutes against his former club.
He said: “When you play with world-class players, they’ve got that ability to grasp a game when you need it the most and Mikey Lewis did that, he’s phenomenal and I think Willie Peters has brought the best out of this young guy.”
Jon Wilkin was also eager to praise Willie Peters and his management of Mikey Lewis during his assessment, explaining: “I think Willie Peters’ most genius bit of coaching in Mikey Lewis was telling him to stay in the blue. So Mikey Lewis spent a lot of his game in the red, which is highly emotional and almost aggressive.
“Well, Willie Peters has demanded that he stays in the blue, a calmer version of himself and I really see that within games. Mikey gets himself out of the red zone, which is dangerous for him, and flicks into it when he needs to.
“The last minutes of the Leeds game, he flicks into the red and won the game for his team. He’s world class. He’s properly world class.”
