Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has confirmed selection plans for Friday night against St Helens amidst an injury update with one man set to head for scans.
The Robins host St Helens on Friday night, eight days out from their clash with Warrington Wolves at Wembley and that’s seen plenty of questions about rotation.
Peters has spoken about the importance of momentum in recent weeks and he underlined that again when speaking to the media, stating that “there’s no doubt that we’ll look to play a strong team”.
One man who likely won’t be playing is winger Lee Kershaw, someone who could have been rotated in, with Peters confirming that the former London Broncos man has been sent for scans after an issue in training.
“Unfortunately, today we’re just waiting to see scans on Lee Kershaw,” Peters confirmed, adding: “He went down with a knee issue, so we’re hoping that’s not too serious.”
Kershaw has had limited minutes since his arrival at Craven Park but one man who’s been an ever-present in Super League could be set for a rest.
Hull KR boss confirms no challenge for forward’s disciplinary charge
That man is Dean Hadley with the forward one of the only players to play in every Super League game so far but after a minor calf issue against Warrington and a further three points on his disciplinary record, now could be the time that ‘Deano’ sits out.
On that knock, Peters confirmed: “He’s fine. It was more just a contact injury. He wasn’t sure after they got home just how he’d come out of the tackle but it’s more just a contact to his calf, so he’s OK.”
As for the Grade B charge he picked up, meaning he’s now just three points away from a ban, Peters labelled it as “not ideal”, but pointed to plans that were already in place for a forward to be handed an opportunity.
On the charge, the Hull KR boss said: “If you do challenge, then they can be doubled or more points and all that sort of stuff so we’ve accepted it and we just have to make a decision around, Dean, and what we decide to do.
“It’s an important game for us so we certainly want Dean in our side. I was going to give an opportunity to Eribe Doro anyway. He was going to play regardless, so he’ll play this weekend.”
Since signing from Bradford Bulls ahead of the season, Doro has made one Super League appearance and played once in the Challenge Cup, as well as loan games back with the Bulls.
Rhyse Martin and Micky McIlorum updates given
Peters has spoken frequently of late on the importance of momentum, particularly when heading into a Challenge Cup Final, and when put to him that Dean Hadley for Doro could be the only change made, the Australian didn’t dismiss the idea.
He responded: “I think the last two years have probably shown that it’s good to have momentum and that’s what we want to keep at the moment.
“For us this week, if we can put in a strong performance, I still think off the back of what we’ve done, there’s momentum going into that final. So we want to keep that, so there’s no doubt that we’ll look to play a strong team.”
One thing that could affect that are “niggles” with Peters conceding that ‘lots’ of players carried them so that could force other changes later in the week.
He also gave an update on the Robins’ two long-term absentees, Rhyse Martin and Micky McIlorum, labelling them as “not too bad”.
“It’s probably a little bit slow for Rhyse. We’ve earmarked the Wakefield game for him,” Peters said.
“Micky McIlorum is one of those where we’ve just got to see. There’s no sort of game set for him at the moment.
“We’ll see where he’s at over the next couple of weeks and then once he can start to filter back in, see how he passes the ball and then obviously contact and loads and things like that. So we’ll see where he’s at.”
