Hull KR man leaves contract early to seek ‘new opportunity’ for 2026

Hull KR have confirmed that one of their contracted playmakers will leave the club at the end of the 2025 season to seek game time elsewhere.

Danny Richardson signed for Hull KR midway through the 2024 season, brought in as a depth option, with the half currently out on loan at York Knights and recovering from injury.

During his time with the Robins, he made six appearances, with four of those coming this season. The last of those came in Round 18 when Richardson suffered the ankle injury that he is currently recovering from.

He had also spent time on loan at Salford Red Devils, whilst featuring heavily for the Robins’ reserves but the reported addition of Jack Charles for 2026 means Hull KR already have their back-up playmaker.

Richardson has also cited a desire to play more games as the reason for his departure, noting a “new opportunity” in 2026.

Richardson’s exit was announced by Hull KR with the club sharing the news of the 29-year-old’s departure.

A statement read: “Hull KR can confirm that scrum-half, Danny Richardson will depart the club at the end of the 2025 Betfred Super League season to take up a new opportunity for 2026.

“The 29-year-old brought valuable experience and control to the halves during his time at Sewell Group Craven Park, providing leadership and consistency when called upon.”

Willie Peters paid tribute to Richardson for his efforts over the last 16 months, stating: “On behalf of the club, I want to thank Danny for his contribution to Hull KR over the past two seasons.”

“Danny would have liked to have played more first team rugby, but certainly when he’s played, he’s not let us down and has been a popular member of the team.”

Richardson thanked the club, adding: “It’s been a privilege to play with the boys. They’re an honest hardworking group that welcomed me in from the off.

“I’ve not played as much as I wanted over the past couple of seasons, injuries have played a part in that too. There comes a point where you have to go out and play and I’m looking forward to doing that with a new opportunity in 2026.”

Richardson is still recovering from the ankle injury that he sustained against Leigh and he’s in a race to be fit for the Championship play-offs, with York Knights looking to add a Grand Final to the 1895 Cup and their League Leaders Shield.
