Hull KR hooker talks England chances: “It’d be unbelievable” to play in the Ashes

Hull KR hooker Jez Litten applauds fans

Hull KR hooker Jez Litten has been touted by many to make his way into Shaun Wane’s England squad at the end of the season and it’s something he’s working towards.

Litten has been a standout for Rovers so far this season, and as an ever-present, that consistency has definitely caught Wane’s eye for a potential call-up.

The 27-year-old has one England cap to his name, playing in the 2023 mid-season international against France, but playing in an Ashes series is something he has his sights set on.

Talking in Hull KR’s pre-match press conference ahead of their game against St Helens on Friday night, he said: “I mean, that’d be unbelievable. It’s the pinnacle to represent your country for me.

“I’d be so proud to do that but obviously, I’ve got to perform at Hull KR week in week out and there’s a lot of good hookers in the Super League so it’s something I’ve sort of got to park really.”

The Hull KR hooker shared that he’s spoken to Shaun Wane when Hull KR hosted Wigan Warriors back in April and would be happy to play wherever the England boss needs him to.

He finished: “There are a lot of boys that are putting themselves out there. There are some good performers in Super League, and hopefully, I can just keep up and keep improving as the year goes on.

“Obviously, hooker is my main role but I played half growing up, and if we need it at KR, then I’ve done it a couple of times, so it’s something I’m familiar with.”

Whilst he’d love to represent his country again, it’s not something that’s at the forefront of his mind, with his Hull KR schedule pretty full.

With his side sitting at the top of Super League, a game against St Helens this weekend and a Challenge Cup final on the horizon, Litten hopes that performing for Hull KR will get him the nod come the autumn.

He added: “I can’t think about it too much, I’ve just got to focus on turning up each week for all boys and performing, and hopefully I can put myself in the shop window come the end of the year.

“Obviously, if there’s an Ashes series at the end of the year, then I think every player in the Super League will be thinking about it. I’m just one of them who is hoping to put the best foot forward for it.”

If Shaun Wane can pick a hooker from Wigan, St Helens, or Warrington, or a player from those clubs to play out of position as a hooker, he will. One hint of an Australian based player, he can also forget it. Playing for Hull KR he has little or no chance. That’s just the way it goes. It doesn’t matter how well he plays, how well other players from East of the Pennines play, they’re at a significant disadvantage.
