Hull KR forward Rhyse Martin to retire after 2026 Rugby League World Cup

Hull KR star Rhyse Martin has revealed his plans for 2027 and beyond, with the back-rower off-contract at Craven Park at the end of the season.

Martin has confirmed that this year will be his last as a professional player after announcing that he will retire at the season’s end..

The Papua New Guinea captain will hang up the boots after hopefully representing his country once more, with the World Cup down under seen as the perfect way to go out.

Making his NRL debut with Canterbury Bulldogs in 2018, he moved to Super League part-way through 2019 to sign with Leeds Rhinos.

Becoming a fan favourite at Headingley, particularly with his impressive goal-kicking ability, he would stay at the club until the end of 2024, where he would join the Robins.

Making 25 NRL appearances and playing 132 games for the Rhinos, he has 28 games for the Robins under his best with his next one set to be one of the biggest – the Challenge Cup Final.

On the international stage, the PNG skipper has played 21 times for the Kumuls, scoring seven tries and kicking 72 goals.

Hull KR star Rhyse Martin confirms retirement

Commenting on the decision, Martin said: “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of playing professional rugby league and for it to be my life. I am so lucky and grateful that I have been able to have the career I’ve had.

“I walk away at the end of the season knowing that I have given everything for each club I’ve had the honour of representing and hope that I have left the jersey in a better place.

“I would like to thank all the coaches and staff who have helped me on my journey.

“…I look forward to finishing the year strong for Hull KR and giving everything to the team.

“With it being a World Cup in 2026, it feels like the right time to hang up my boots representing my country at the end of the year.

“Thank you, Rugby League.”
