Hull KR duo delighted to reach Grand Final as injury update given on star full-back

Hull KR

Hull KR are 80 minutes from lifting their first ever Super League title, as they head to Old Trafford next week to face Wigan Warriors in a Grand Final rematch from last year.

The Robins brushed aside a St Helens side that had no counter for what was an impressive defensive display, combined with some clinical finishing that included two tries from centre Oliver Gildart.

Gildart was named Player of the Match in what his just his third game back from a knee injury which kept him side lined for 17 matches, and after impressing in the final two rounds of the season, earned a place in the starting squad for the Semi-Final.

When asked post-match what it was like to be back in the side after so long out, he revealed he is pleased to be part of the squad at the right time of the season, and hopes the year ends with yet another trophy for the Robins.

He said: “It’s been hard been on the sidelines, especially with these boys playing so well. Missing out at Wembley was tough, but I’m just so proud to be a part of this group. I got myself right for the back end of the year and Willie put his faith in me to play tonight and I really appreciate that and hopefully I’ve paid him back at bit there.”

On winning at Old Trafford, something he has already done twice in his career, he added: “It’s really special. Like I said, I missed Wembley and I played in the league leaders but I didn’t really feel part of it because I missed so much of the season, but it would mean the world to me if I could win the Super League next week. For the club, the fans, everyone’s been great since I joined here and no one deserves it more than this club.”

Whilst they were nowhere near perfect, KR produced a much better display than they put out at the end of the regular season. Fatigue clearly started to set in and Gildart explained how the week off has helped him and the side find some of that form that made them such a dominant force in the league this year.

“I think the first 40 minutes was definitely [back to their best],” he said. “It’s something we spoke about, investing our edges into our defence and keeping them pinned down there. It’s probably the hardest thing to do in rugby, and probably why we’ve been a bit off the last few weeks – it saps your energy. We’ve had a good rest this week, Willie really looked after us and I thought we was good tonight in the first 40.”

Hull KR star provides injury update following second-half scare

One thing that could have potentially marred KR’s celebrations 0n Saturday night was the late injury to Arthur Mourgue.

The Frenchman left the field with 12 minutes left on the clock, after he had competed for a high ball with Saints’ Tristan Sailor. Once he hit the ground, without the ball, Morgan Knowles tackled Mourgue to the ground, without the ball, which is thought to have caused the injury.

Willie Peters’ had planned for any injuries to his back line by keeping Jack Broadbent on the bench. The former Leeds man has been used in a number of positions this year, including full-back, and his versatility showed again as he performed well in the final minutes of the game,

However, KR fans will be pleased to hear that Mourgue, when asked about any injury worries, said he was fine, and will be good to go for next week’s Grand Final.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks, he said: “My left knee got a bit of an overextension, but I’ll be sweet. I feel fine. No big problem.”

On the prospect of facing Wigan, who finished second in the league and pushed KR for the League Leaders Shield until the final round, he said: “I hope so. We’ll see. As I said, it’s going to be a tough game against Wigan, but we are going to prepare well and just give our best to win this trophy.

“I think you can see that even if they are on the backfoot, they just need a moment and they can change the momentum, so we need to play every play and be ready just to have a tough battle.
