Success in the Challenge Cup final for Hull KR has seen head coach Willie Peters dubbed as ‘next in line’ to make an NRL move, according to a leading voice Down Under.
Hull KR ended their 40-year trophy drought when they defeated Warrington Wolves on Saturday at Wembley but it was far from plain sailing.
Heading into the game as heavy favourites, the Robins found themselves frustrated, making errors, and losing the territory battle thanks to the brilliance of Marc Sneyd.
Then Tom Davies scored in the dying minutes as Warrington’s defence faltered for the first time, with Mikey Lewis’ conversion ending decades of hurt for Hull KR as they won 8-6.
Peters being the man to lead them to such success has now ensured that the Australian is the “next coach in line to get an NRL gig” according to Australian journalist The Mole, writing for Wide World of Sports.
Hull KR coach sees stocks rise after Challenge Cup win
Peters was previously linked with the Perth Bears role, something he quickly dismissed as he outlined his intent to focus on the job at hand at Hull KR.
“It’s out of my control,” Peters, who is contracted until the end of the 2028 season, said.
“I’ve always said that at some stage, and the club know, if an opportunity came up I’d like to coach in the NRL. My whole focus is what I’m doing now.
“I’m under contract. At some stage, if an opportunity came up I’d certainly look at it, it’s something that I’d love to and people internally know that so I’ll share that with you guys as well, but my whole focus is on what I’m doing now and that’s it.”
Now that he’s guided a side to silverware, something that plenty believe could set about a string of big successes for the Robins, it’s understandable that he’s on the NRL radar once again.
According to The Mole: “Clubs have been aware of Peters’ talents for the past couple of years in Super League and his stocks rose even higher last weekend after he steered Hull KR to a tense win in the Challenge Cup final against the Sam Burgess-coached Warrington Wolves.”
He also argued that “it’s only a matter of time before he gets a top job at one of several struggling Aussie clubs”, with Gold Coast Titans possibly being one such option.
Brad Arthur was recently linked to the Titans where head coach Des Hasler is under plenty of pressure.

If 10% of the mole’s predictions came to fruit he’d be the most successful pundit in history.
