Hull KR coach leaves club as return to Championship side confirmed

Hull KR assistant coach Danny Ward has left the club after two seasons, and will return to a familiar face ahead of next season.

Ward, who represented KR as a player in 2007, started his rugby league career at Leeds Rhinos, and went on to make over 130 appearances for the Headingley outfit.

Moves to Castleford and the Robins came next, before he found his new home at the London Broncos, then known as Harlequins RL.

Ward reached just over a century of appearances for the club in the capital, before retiring in 2011.

He then turned to coaching, and found himself part of the Broncos’ pathways system, as he oversaw the U19s side in 2014 and 2015.

After working his way through the London ranks, he was promoted to head coach in 2018. Ward led the club to Super League promotion in his first full season in charge, and stayed with the Broncos until the end of the 2021 season.

After a brief spell at the Tigers in the second half of 2023, he moved to the Rovers to become an assistant under Willie Peters.

He has spent the last two years as the club’s defence coach, something he has thrived at given KR’s defensive record over the 2024 and 2025.

Now, he will return to the capital, and work under incoming coach Jason Demetriou as an assistant, and has signed a deal until the end of the 2028 season.

Former London Broncos coach returns to club following Hull KR exit

Ward, who has family in London and has been commuting up and down the country for the past two seasons, cannot have wished for a better time in East Hull, and wishes the club all the best in the years to come.

Speaking to KR’s club website, he said: “What a club. It’s a special group of people at Hull KR and add that to the success we’ve had this year. It’s been an unbelievable two years for me.

“Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. I’ve decided to move back down to London to be closer to my family. My daughter and wife have been down there for the last two years and they sacrificed a lot for me to go and achieve the things I have at Hull KR. Now it’s time to go back and be closer to them.

“It was a really tough choice, because it’s been amazing. I’ve loved every second of being back at Hull KR with the staff, players and the fans. Now it’s time for a different challenge.”
