Hull KR coach issues three-point plan as response demanded after ill-disciplined defeat

Despite admitting that the club could find ‘10 things we need to change’ after the loss to Wakefield, Hull KR coach Willie Peters has identified ‘three key areas’ to fix.

The Australian watched his side put in one of their worst home performances during his three-and-a-half years in charge with Hull KR failing to score a single try as they lost 20-6 against Wakefield Trinity.

Three Rhyse Martin penalty goals were all the Robins could put on Trinity, who steamrolled an ill-disciplined Hull KR side down the middle of the park.

Peters confirmed that both Dean Hadley and Tom Amone will return this week so that should offer some more resilience and grit in the pack, though he’s called on a wide scale response from his players.

“I was obviously disappointed after the game but no more than the players,” Peters admitting at his pre-match presser on Wednesday.

“The players were disappointed after our performance last week but it’s gone and it’s always how you react and how you respond.”

The response so far, internally and at training, has been positive he confirmed: “I’ve seen some really positive energy around the place. The players have got a smile on their face and that’s the important part. When you have a game and you play like we did last week, taking nothing away from Wakefield, they deserved to win but it wasn’t a positive performance from us.

“It was ill-disciplined and we had a lot of errors and made things tough for ourselves. One thing I will say is that there’s still plenty of fight in the team.”

Hull KR boss urges side to fix up discipline

Hull KR will need more than just positivity and fight to beat a Warrington side who are also out of shape at the moment and Peters has explained that his side must start putting fatigue on opponents, rather than allowing it to be piled upon themselves.

He said: “If we put some fatigue in the opposition instead of ourselves and that will give us a good chance. I think that’s the key. We’ve just got to narrow our focus to what’s important.”

Narrowing a focus was a key theme of what he spoke about when discussing improvements, admitting that ten things could be fixed from the loss to Wakefield but that ultimately, three key areas will prove important.

“It’s one of those games where we go, okay, let’s fix up our discipline (because) there’s two or three key areas and we fix that up,” Peters said.

“In that game we could find 10 things that we need to change but what we need to do is narrow the focus to what are a couple of areas that we need to clean up.

“One is our discipline. One is if something goes against us, let’s defend it because we’ve done that extremely well for long periods of time, and then (another) is get our last play sorted. We stick to those sort of three things and it’ll put us in the game.”

As for errors, Peters admitted that they are individual matters with a focus on simply keeping the ball and not reacting when it goes awry.

He said: “We’re not looking and searching for the perfect performance but what we’re looking for is just when we’ve got the ball, keep the ball. Not saying or reacting to give a referee the ability to make a decision.”
