Hull KR coach dubbed ‘best in Super League’ as harsh Catalans verdict delivered by Jon Wilkin

Jon Wilkin Willie Peters

Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin has labelled Hull KR head coach Willie Peters as the best in Super League ‘by some stretch’, whilst also tearing into Catalans Dragons after the Robins dismantled them last Friday.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Rugby League Verdict, Wilkin recalled last Friday’s match, which Hull KR won 68-6, to praise the Robins’ head coach and slam the Catalans players.

He hadn’t pulled his punches in his half-time assessment last week when he argued that captain Benjamin Garcia, who was sent off for punching, only did so because he was frustrated after being the ‘only player having a crack’.

Wilkin has since doubled down on those comments, arguing that Les Dracs “might as well have stayed in France”.

“They were useless, they might as well have not been there,” he exclaimed, adding: “It was all about Hull KR celebrating their Challenge Cup win and Catalans did the nice thing and rolled over to get their belly scratched by Hull KR in front of 11,000 people.”

Wilkin also claimed little could be learnt from the game by the home side, however, he would make the bold claim that Willie Peters is Super League’s best head coach – something that will turn heads.

He argued: “They’re a champion team who are so good to watch, they’re disciplined and organised and I think they’ve got the best coach in Super League, in Willie Peters, by some stretch.”

Catalans Dragons have ‘thrown in the towel’ claims Jon Wilkin after Hull KR loss

Whether Peters is the best coach in Super League will be debated by many with the likes of Matt Peet an obvious challenger, however, even Peet or Peters would struggle to turn Catalans around on current form.

In the eyes of Wilkin, and many others, some of those in Perpignan are ‘taking it for granted’ with the likes of Luke Keary having already been in Wilkin’s crosshairs this year.

He would point out again: “They’ve signed a lot of players who are on big money. Playing sport and being paid to do so is such a privilege and a joy. I see players at Catalans who are just taking it for granted.

“They’re being paid exorbitant amounts of money to live in the South of France to come and play professional sport. It’s just a privilege and they’re just letting their club owner, Bernard Guasch, and the fans down because they’re just not trying.”

Wilkin conceded: “I’m fine with players who aren’t good enough and you have bad days and good days but not to try is just criminal. It’s your responsibility to have a crack and Catalans just aren’t.

“They might kid themselves and think they are but they’re no. I’ve watched them enough times this year and Catalans have thrown in the towel.”

Sitting ninth in Super League and five points off the play-offs, Les Dracs host fourth-placed Leigh on Saturday in another very tough game where they’ll need a seismic improvement on last week to even make a dent.
