Hull KR coach departs on eve of 2026 season after over 20 years at the club

A Hull KR stalwart has confirmed his exit from the club after more than 20 years of service at Craven Park, as a player and coach.

Jason Netherton, the club’s academy coach, has taken to social media to confirm his departure from Hull KR, having first joined over 20 years ago as a player.

The Hull-born 43-year-old started his playing career with Leeds Rhinos but the overwhelming majority of his playing career was spent at Hull KR, joining them in 2004 and playing until 2012.

He had a short stint in Australia with Mackay Cutters but returned to the Robins and played on until the end of the 2014 season, racking up almost 200 appearances for Hull KR.

Upon retiring, he took up a coaching role with the club and was part of the City of Hull Academy before then taking on the role with the Robins when that larger academy system came to a close.

Hull KR coach confirms exit after two decades

After over two decades with the club, Netherton has now confirmed his exit with a post on social media.

It read: “After over 20 years at Hull KR, my time at the club has come to a conclusion.

“It has been one of my life’s pleasures to be involved with such a fantastic club, both as a player for 10 years and then transitioning into coaching and finally as management.

“I am extremely proud of the work that we have managed to do with rebuilding the academy over the last four years post COVID and would like to thank everyone that I have had the pleasure to work with, both players, staff, and wider stakeholders along this wonderful journey.

“I am excited to see what comes next.”

The above post was captioned ‘Robin #1045 – Over and Out’, with questions understandably raised about what Netherton will do next and how the Hull KR academy will look.

Rovers have appointed Luke Gale, who had been an academy coach at Wakefield Trinity, to their staff but it’s thought that is a senior role.
