Hull KR hope to have a degree of clarity regarding their half-back situation in the next three to four weeks. That’s according to chief executive Paul Lakin, who has been in open dialogue with Tyrone May about the half-back’s intentions and future.
Speaking to Serious About Rugby League in pre-season, May, who is out of contract at the end of the season, outlined his desire to play with his brothers, Terrell, who is currently at Wests Tigers, and Taylan, who is unattached after leaving Penrith Panthers last year. Willie Peters backed up that notion to Serious About Rugby League at the end of March, claiming May is looking for opportunities down under and underlining his expectation that the number seven will leave the club at the end of the year.
Since then, the Robins have been linked with interest in Brisbane Broncos’ Adam Reynolds and Leigh Leopards’ Lachlan Lam.
Lakin admits KR have been making enquiries and looking at options, but he has also made it clear that things are still up in the air at this point.
“We’re undecided,” Lakin told Serious About Rugby League. “We’re talking, Tyrone and ourselves are talking and we’re looking at options.
“I suppose the answer is nothing has changed from your conversation with Willie. We do need to look to conclude this probably in the next three to four weeks and that’s the intentions of all parties, whether Tyrone stays or he moves on at the end of the year and we secure the right replacement.
“It’s top of mind at the moment in terms of the final piece in the jigsaw, but genuinely it’s to be decided.
“It’s fair to say we are (making enquiries) but we have open dialogue with Tyrone too. We’re looking at all our options at the moment but if there’s a final piece of the jigsaw to resolve for the 2026 squad then that’s the piece we need to resolve and we’ll look to do that in the next three or four weeks.”
Hull KR chief talks recruitment plans
With Tom Amone and Jumah Sambou already secured for next season and Arthur Mourgue and Noah Booth making the switch early, Rovers have already been busy as they prepare for 2026. And, with salary cap options limited, it seems wrapping up the half-back situation one way or the other could be the last piece of major business.
“We’ll be more or less done,” Lakin said in regard to any other business. “There’ll be recruitment of one or two younger players in terms of the wider squad, numbers 28-30, so one or two younger players.
“Once we finalise our decision at half-back, unless another opportunity arises that we’re not aware of, but salary cap wise too, we’ll be done.”
