Hull KR boss Willie Peters’ NRL stocks fly with ‘super coach’ potential noted after Grand Final win

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters was under the NRL spotlight before he won a treble but the links will intensify even more now after his side completed the treble at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Robins defeated reigning champions Wigan 24-6 to win their first Super League crown and become just the fifth side to win the treble in the modern era.

It’s a remarkable achievement for a side who were relegated in the not so distant past and whilst they’ve been progressing for some time, their trajectory to the top has rapidly increased under Willie Peters.

Appointed ahead of the 2023 season, he guided the Robins to a Challenge Cup Final in year one, the Grand Final in year two, and now the treble in year three, and despite being contracted until the end of 2028. the NRL talks will not stop.

In fact, they’ve already increased off the back of that treble with Australian pundit Paul Crawley now making the bold suggestion that Peters could be the man to take over from Craig Bellamy at Melbourne Storm, with Crawley speaking of Peters as a ‘potential super coach’.

‘Not if, but when and where’ Hull KR boss gets NRL chance, claims pundit

Crawley, writing for Fox Sports, declared that the question is no longer ‘if’ Willie Peters will get a shot in the NRL, but instead ‘where’ and ‘when’ and he’s made the suggestion of Melbourne as an outside chance.

Struggling teams such as the Tigers, Manly and the Dragons were also noted but Crawley argued that with Craig Bellamy seemingly set to start winding down after so long in charge then Peters could be an option.

He stated that the Storm will want someone who “has the potential to be the next super coach”, with Peters labelled as a ‘genuine option’ if club legend Billy Slater doesn’t take the role.

Hull KR fans will understandably have fears about NRL clubs coming knocking because it is inevitable and it had already begun before the Grand Final win.

Peters knocked back the chance to interview for the Newcastle Knights job, instead insisting that he would focus on his role with the Robins – something that has now paid dividends.

Despite completing the treble, there’s no time off with Peters set to be the assistant coach for Australia at the upcoming Ashes – another role that will further his stocks in the NRL.

Club CEO Paul Lakin recently explained that he wasn’t worried about Peters leaving for the NRL anytime soon but the conversation is only set to get louder and louder off the back of this success.
