No one at Hull KR will be getting carried away by the position they find themselves in after their 48-0 demolition of Castleford Tigers on Thursday night. That’s the message from Willie Peters, who watched his side turn in a typically assured and dominant showing to put Danny McGuire’s team to the sword at Wheldon Road.
Rovers were simply sublime against the Tigers, scoring nine unanswered tries to brush aside fears of a mental slump and claim their fifth Super League shut out of the year.
It means the Challenge Cup winners sit four points clear at the top of the table now and will do for at least 24 hours with second placed Wigan Warriors in action against Wakefield Trinity on Friday night.
Rovers aren’t looking too much into the table, though, with just under half of the campaign still remaining,
“We said at the start of the year that we wanted to celebrate little wins along the way, it’s a long season but there’s still a long way to go so we’re not getting too carried away,” Peters told Sky Sports after the game.
He added: “We weren’t happy with the first game against Cas at our place and we wanted more energy which I thought we had. Wembley has gone now, it’s in the past. It’s a memory we’ll always have and it was a great experience but it’s the Super League now and there’s no excuse for us to be flat. We need to make sure we handle the weeks accordingly and get ready to play.
“Defensively we always say is our number one focus and when I first came over that was the area I wanted to see improvement and we did. Every year we’ve improved but the players are the ones doing it, they do it in training and they do it in games.
“We pride ourselves in that and I think most of Super League does now. In years previous it was mostly around attack but teams pride themselves on defence and you can see that.”
Willie Peters’ Hull KR ‘spray’
Peters wasn’t happy with all of his side’s performance, though, and Jack Broadbent, who scored two tries on the night and received the broadcaster’s man of the match award, letting slip that he received a ‘spray’ at the interval.
“I wasn’t too happy about that pass just before half-time and momentum changed in that last five minutes,” Peters said on the reason for his ire. “If they went and scored then 20-6 is a little bit different. I was really happy with the way they responded and Jack responded in the second half.”
