Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has sent a message to the fans after the Robins dismantled Catalans Dragons 68-6.
Returning to Craven Park as Challenge Cup winners, there was a party atmosphere in East Hull as 11,350 packed into the stadium with the club confirming there to be a record number of home fans in attendance.
They were all rewarded as well as Hull KR put on a clinic against a Catalans side who looked to give up at times as they let ill-discipline and even worse defence cause their collapse.
One of the catalysts for the collapse was Benjamin Garcia’s red card for punching and having struggled with 13 men on the field, Les Dracs fell apart down to 12.
Assessing the game post-match, Willie Peters said: “Yeah, it was a bit of a scratchy start, but I’m really happy with the way that we found our groove.”
He was speaking as he and his family, along with the rest of the Hull KR squad and their loved ones, paraded the pitch with the Challenge Cup trophy.
Hull KR ‘wanted to give fans something they deserve’
Peters had confirmed that would happen during his mid-week presser, explaining it was an added drive for his players to perform and ensure it wasn’t a ‘sombre’ celebration.
His side ensured that and Peters confirmed again: “We spoke about tonight and this is for the fans. We had our celebration last week. We wanted to give these fans something they deserve.”
Leading Super League at the halfway stage of the season, Hull KR are in contention for a double or even treble when it comes to silverware and when asked about the drive for more, Peters pointed to his surroundings and the recent Wembley win.
“Just looking at the screen there, looking at last week, we want more of it,” he said.
“There’s a lot of hard work that you have to do to get that so we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves.Of course, we’re going to enjoy this. It’s for a lot of people in and around the club but also people that are not with us anymore, we said that last week, we’re going to do it for a lot of people.
“Today is a celebration of last week, but we’re going back to business tomorrow and we’ll be focusing on Castleford.”
Willie Peters pays tribute to family’s sacrifices
He also paid a big tribute to his family, who were alongside him parading the pitch, as he pointed out their sacrifices in making such success happen.
“They do everything,” he admitted when asked about their influence.
“Probably the biggest cry that I had was the next morning with these guys, just thanking them for what they do for me and the sacrifices.
“They’re all in. It’s my family, number one but I always say that rugby league is going to be a close second because there’s so much into it but this is number one.
“Those guys’ families, they’re number one. It’s the most important thing to us but we certainly enjoy everything about this club.”
