Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has hit out at those who have allowed the Salford Red Devils’ saga to drag on until Round 20.
Speaking after his side’s 74-12 demolition of the Red Devils, in which Hull KR scored 14 tries with Joe Burgess bagging four and Mikey Lewis racking up eight assists, the Robins coach was more concerned with the plight of the Salford Red Devils’ players and fans, as well as his counterpart Paul Rowley.
Asked to reflect on the night, he was quick to pick out his side’s sloppy defence with the Red Devils ironically scoring more than the average of what Hull KR concede, however, Peters’ attention quickly turned to those who have allowed the Salford situation to spiral.
“Obviously, those two tries, I’m not happy with those. They came straight through the middle of us, so that’s something that we need to fix,” the Australian said.
He then admitted: “I’m not sure what to feel though. Obviously, the situation in Salford at the moment, it’s not good. We’re in a round 20 and they’re still in that situation.
“I feel for Paul Rowley, I feel for the players, I feel for the fans that turn up every week. Some people have got to be accountable to what’s happening because, to be honest, it’s a little bit embarrassing for our game over here.
“I don’t think it’s great at all for anyone. It doesn’t help anyone.”
Hull KR boss disappointed with defence after Salford Red Devils win
They were clearly the words of a rugby league fan with Peters showing plenty of compassion for the innocent fans and players who are punished weakly, whilst calling for accountability for those who have allowed the situation to continue.
Plenty of opposition head coaches will have felt the same throughout the year but ultimately, they have their own job to do and Peters explained that as he spoke about what his pre-match talks focused on that would precede the club’s record away win in Super League.
Peters explained: “We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves, worry about what we can control, and that’s why those couple of tries that they scored are disappointing. We pride ourselves in our defence, especially throughout middle third. So all we can control is what we do, and we spoke about that.
“I thought we started the game really well. We had that period for about 15 minutes. We had a couple of errors and a few penalties and we lost our discipline a little bit.”
Perhaps in a nod to the fact that several senior Salford players didn’t take to the field, Peters concluded: “We said we’re not going to worry about who plays for Salford because poor Rowls didn’t know himself probably until kick-off.”
