Hull KR boss explains match-defining moment in Catalans Dragons defeat

Hull KR

Hull KR boss Willie Peters has explained a key moment that cost his side a potential victory, as the club suffered defeat to Catalans Dragons.

The Robins lost 26-20 in what was an enthralling contest. A depleted Dragons side had just one fit substitute for the final half an hour after injuries to Mathieu Laguerre, Lewis Dodd, Josh Allen and Julian Bousquet.

KR formed a late comeback to go from 20-6 down to 20-20, but they couldn’t find that winning score to take home the two points.

It wasn’t for a lack of trying though, and the champions had a brilliant moment to steal a win, but an error from full-back Jack Broadbent brought the play to a close.

Broadbent broke the line and in an attempt to beat his opposite number Charlie Staines, tried to pass back inside to Jez Litten, but it didn’t find the target and a huge opportunity went begging.

Had the full-back gone to ground, KR would have had a full set to attack the Dragons line or even slot over a drop goal, and it was that moment that left Peters wondering what could have been.

Discussing that moment post-match, the boss said: “We were looking for the quick fix to try and win that game…

“If we get down and up, who knows [what could happen] off the back of it.

“It was play one, play two, so we had a full set, but it didn’t happen for us. Catalans won the game and they played extremely well.

“They’re a good team and we knew what we were going to get tonight, so there’s no surprises there.”

After an already hectic start to the season, the Robins don’t have it any easier in the coming weeks with games coming against St Helens, Hull FC and York Knights in the Challenge Cup.

However, Peters is not using tiredness as an excuse and backs his side to show up in those matches.

“We’ve got three home games now, which will be good for us to go back home. We haven’t played at home this year.

“[The next three] are all tough. They’re all playing well at the moment, but I’m not worried about anyone else.

Where we sit at the moment, it’s about us improving and getting better. It’s not about opposition and what they’re doing. We need to improve.”
