Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has reacted to his side’s 31-12 win over Warrington Wolves who the Robins face in the Challenge Cup Final in two weeks time.
It was another relatively comfortable win for the Robins despite not being at their best and Peters cited both positives and negatives from the game, however, he’s dropped another hint about how Hull KR will line up next week in the game before their trip to Wembley.
Speaking mid-week to the press and pre-game to Sky Sports, he noted the importance of momentum heading into the final and how both Hull KR in 2023 and Warrington Wolves in 2024 had rested players ahead of the game, only to lose at Wembley.
Asked post-match about the fact Hull KR are now on a six-game win streak and the importance of momentum, Peters pointed to previous lessons which could suggest a strong line-up fielded next week.
“It’s really important,” the Australian said of momentum, adding: “One thing I learnt a couple of years ago and last year is that you need the momentum. Try and keep it if you’ve got it, so we’ll try do that.
“We’ve got a challenge against St Helens next week who are playing well, they’re a great side.”
Hull KR expecting different Warrington for Wembley
Sam Burgess surprised with his selection as both Marc Sneyd and Sam Powell missed out with a knock and a rest given as the reasons, but Hull KR went full strength with their line-up.
Despite that, the Robins didn’t blitz Warrington but they certainly did enough and Peters credited his side for taking their chances, though he picked out a number of issues.
“There was both (positives and negatives),” he admitted.
“I thought we took our opportunities, which was probably the difference; that was the positive.
“The negatives were inside shoulder in the first half which was nowhere near good enough. The drop out, we don’t get the ball back, the kick off where we don’t get the ball back and there was a lot of other moments in the game that weren’t great.
“You play what is in front of you and I thought Warrington were really good tonight. They obviously have an inexperienced side to what they will have in a couple of weeks time, there’s no doubt about that but I thought they kept going and we ended up getting the result.”
One of the standouts for Hull KR was once again winger Joe Burgess who is setting forth a very strong argument to make it into Shaun Wane’s Ashes squad, especially if he can replicate scores such as his second where he brilliantly switched hands to ground the ball.
“I didn’t think he got it to be honest, I looked down but he found a way,” Peters said when asked about his star winger.
“We probably should have given him another one but those wingers, they finish and he’s a pleasure to watch. He’s one of the best when he’s in open space.”
