Willie Peters has dismissed the notion that Hull KR can wrap up the League Leaders’ Shield this week.
The Robins currently sit four points clear at the top of the Super League table after seeing off Castleford Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Craven Park. That win was enough to see them go seven points clear of third placed Leigh Leopards and with six games to go, they look certainties to claim a spot in the top two at least.
However, Rovers go to Wigan Warriors on Friday night for a game that most people believe will decide the League Leaders’ Shield race one way or the other. If they win, KR will go six points clear at the top with 10 points still to play for.
If they lose, Peters’ side will be pulled back to two with Wigan holding all the momentum and psychological advantage heading into the final month or so of action.
The KR head coach doesn’t believe Friday’s clash at the Brick Community Stadium will be quite so decisive though.

“I think there’s too long to go,” Peters told the BBC when asked if it was an opportunity to stake their claim for what would be their second trophy of the season. “There’s five weeks after that so when you’ve got Leigh playing the way they are and then St Helens now and Leeds, they’re all gunning home as well. No one is safe.
“I think today (Saturday) got us in the semis but it just shows how tight the competition is. We’re cemented in the semis but that doesn’t mean we’re cemented in one, two, three or four. It will work itself out.
“Next week is the most important for us and we always say that but next week is Wigan so it’s a big game.”
Asked whether it was nice to have the four-point cushion approaching the game, Peters added: “It doesn’t really matter, we’ve got two teams going at it next week. I don’t think it matters too much about who’s sitting where, they want to beat us, we want to beat them. Nothing has changed. It will be the same prep for both teams to get the victory, they want to win at their place and we want to win away regardless of ladder position.”

Why do people keep saying this match will decide the league leaders shield??? If Rovers win, they will be overwhelming favourites to take the shield, but even if Wigan win, Rovers willl still be favourites. With still a two point lead and hugely superior points difference, they would have to lose two more games and Wigan win all of theirs, so please stop this talk of a decider.
