The Super League disciplinary news is in with the major story being that Hull FC forward Liam Knight avoided any punishment for his red card and the RFL have now explained why.
Knight was sent off on the eve of half time in a fiery affair between Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC with the Australian’s red card proving crucial as the Black and Whites ended up losing by only two points, 12-10 as Luke Robinson’s side earned their first win of the Super League campaign.
Hull FC head coach John Cartwright was understandably frustrated and confused as to why his front-rower would commit such a reckless tackle with Knight lining Sam Hewitt up and leading with his shoulder, making contact with the head of the Giants man.
That incident had come just moments after both Sam Burgess and Sam Eseh had been sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge and head contact respectively, with both captains instructed to calm their players down by the referee.
The message clearly didn’t get to Knight who had an early bath and effectively cost his team the game but thankfully for him and Hull FC, no further punishment has come.
Hull FC forward Liam Knight not charged despite Super League Magic Weekend red card
The Match Review Panel have met to hand down the disciplinary verdicts and whilst five players have been charged, four from the Huddersfield and Hull game, Knight is not one of them.
Both the players who went to the sin bin, Burgess and Eseh, have received Grade B and Grade C charges meaning they will pay fines, whilst Sam Hewitt and Matty English are hit with Grade B charges after crusher-style tackles saw them placed on report.
But Knight has avoided any action and the RFL have now explained why with the minutes from the forward’s case released.
They state: “Player comes in a reckless manner however contact is mainly all on the body and contact with the head is secondary and minimal.
“Player comes in front and arm is loose ready to wrap but impact of contact takes opponent away.”
Some will argue that Knight is perhaps a very lucky boy but he actually becomes the third player in the past two weeks to be shown a red card on field and recieve no punishment off it.
Neither Sauaso Sue or Ash Handley were hit with penalty points for their red cards in Round Nine and the same can be said of nights.
All five charges from Super League Magic Weekend can be seen below, with each player set to pay a fine.
Player | Club | Opposition | Charge | Grade | Penalty Points | Total Points in previous 12 months | Sanction if applicable |
Isiah Vagana | Wakefield Trinity | Castleford Tigers | Head Contact | B | 3 | 4.5 | Fine |
Tom Burgess | Huddersfield Giants | Hull FC | Late contact on passer | B | 3 | 3 | Fine |
Sam Eseh | Hull FC | Huddersfield Giants | Head Contact | C | 5 | 5 | Fine |

Which mental institution do the Match Review Panel get day release from; is it the same institution as some of the referees get day release from. Are all of them, wannabe comedians?
