Hull FC star branded ‘selfish’ over Mikey Lewis incident that handed KR victory

A Hull FC star has been labelled as ‘selfish’ following a costly error in the Black and Whites’ 18-4 defeat to rivals Hull KR.

‘Selfish’ was how pundit Sam Tomkins branded Cade Cust after the Hull FC utility left his post at marker to get involved with Mikey Lewis, allowing Jack Broadbent to scoot over from dummy-half and put the game beyond the grasp of the Black and Whites.

Broadbent’s second-half score made it 14-0, effectively putting the game to bed and it was all too easy for Hull KR’s centre as he took advantage of the absent marker and ran over rookie full-back Lloyd Kemp.

After Mikey Lewis carried the ball within five yards of the Hull FC line, tackler Cade Cust started to push and shove the reigning Man of Steel, failing to focus on the ball which Broadbent scooped up before hitting the hole and scoring.

Speaking after the match, pundit Jon Wilkin slammed Cust’s actions: “I thought Hull were trying to disrupt Hull KR but there’s a line and you have to get back on task and Cade Cust just doesn’t get back on task.

“He gets so involved in winding Mikey Lewis up that he forgets he’s actually playing a game of rugby.”

Hull FC error slammed by Sam Tomkins

Sam Tomkins went even further in his assessment, exclaiming: “You’ve still got to do your job. That’s selfish from Cade Cust.

“The fact that he’s more bothered about having a push and shove, there’s no punches thrown, and he just gives away six points and that try probably sealed the game.

“(John) Cartwright is not going to be happy looking at that on Monday morning.”

It was no surprise that it was Mikey Lewis who engaged Cade Cust with the Hull KR star at the centre of FC’s attention all afternoon, some of which went way beyond the line including Jack Ashworth’s swinging elbow to his face.

That was labelled as “disgusting” by commentator Jon Wells whilst Willie Peters spoke out post-match about the “blatant” attention Lewis got.

Regarding that, Wilkin and Tomkins explained that it’s something Lewis has to come to expect given his pantomime villain-esque status.

“He’s to expect that and Sam knows all about that, you used to get people wound up,” said Wilkin.

Tomkins responded: “Of course and he’s always going to be a target for every team that he plays against and that’s probably a testament to how well he’s played and what a good player he is.

“Teams are going to notice he’s a target and he is easily riled up himself so teams will get into him.”

The pair also had their say on Elliot Minchella’s sin bin with Wilkin labelling it as ‘forceful and straight on the melon’, whilst Tomkins called it ‘very, very close’ to a red.

Both Ashworth and Minchella are expected to be among a number of players from the Hull derby to be sanctioned by the Match Review Panel today.
