Several Super League clubs including Hull FC and St Helens will be sweating today’s disciplinary panel after Magic Weekend.
Super League returned to Newcastle this year for Magic Weekend and the 18th edition of the showpiece event has been deemed a success with over 64,000 in attendance, the largest crowd since 2018.
Whilst the atmosphere around St James Park was applauded, the action on the field wasn’t too bad either with three of the six games seeing teams split by just two points.
Among those narrow victors were Huddersfield Giants who won their first game of the Super League campaign when they beat Hull FC 12-10 in a match that the disciplinary panel is bound to look at.
The opener between Leigh Leopards and Catalans Dragons went to the wire as Adrian Lam’s side won 26-24 whilst Warrington threatened a comeback against Wigan but ultimately lost 22-20.
Elsewhere, there were wide-margin wins for Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity whilst Leeds Rhinos piled on the pressure at St Helens as they won 17-4.
There was three yellow cards and one send-off across Super League Magic Weekend so there will be plenty to look at today when the Match Review Panel assess all matters disciplinary.
We’ve picked out all the players who were sent to the bin as we preview which Super League teams and players will be sweating today’s disciplinary verdict.
Who will be sweating today’s Super League disciplinary verdict?
The most controversial incident of the weekend saw St Helens’ Lewis Murphy sent to the sin bin when he made contact to the head of Alfie Edgell with his knee as he jumped to contest a high ball.
With the Leeds winger rooted to the floor and Murphy leaping high, his knee made direct contact to the youngsters head and that resulted in him being sent to the bin.
That was the only major disciplinary talking point of day one but day two more than made up for it as we saw two sin bins, one red card and two incidents placed on report and they all came in one game.
Both Matty English and Sam Hewitt were placed on report over crusher-style tackles whilst their Huddersfield teammate Tom Burgess was sent to the bin for a shoulder charge.
Burgess’ shoulder charge seemed to spark five minutes of madness with Sam Eseh doing the same for Hull FC minutes later with the only mitigation being the ball-carrier’s rapid loss of height.
Liam Knight could have no such defence when he levelled Sam Hewitt from the restart with a direct shoulder to the head in what his head coach labelled a “brain explosion”.
