A unique game of rugby league will be played on Sunday with a new Hull FC signing and a Castleford Tigers man among the star players on show.
The county of Cumbria will play their first game since 2022 when they took on Jamaica as the Reggae Boys prepared for the World Cup. That game saw Cumbria come out victorious in front of 3,000 fans at Workington.
Familiar faces playing for Cumbria that day included captain Kyle Amor whilst former St Helens winger Tee Ritson played on the wing. Another who played was Brad Singleton and he’s been named to the 19-man squad that will take on Nigeria in this Sunday’s game.
The Castleford Tigers man is one of the big Super League faces representing his county with new Hull FC signing Harvie Hill another.
Sunday’s game will be played at Barrow’s Craven Park with tickets to attend available, or fans having the ability to purchase access to a stream and watch the game.
Hull FC man headlines Cumbria squad
Cumrbia were a force in rugby league throughout the 20th century but their number of games has slowed down in the modern era with this Sunday’s game against Nigeria just their third since 2007.
The county played one game in the October of 2005, 2006 and 2007, with those three games the first since the 1994 Ashes tour when the Kangaroos beat them 52-8 as Wendell Sailor scored two tries.
This weekend, Cumbria will be going up against Nigeria and Paul Crarey’s side has been thinned from the initial 30-man training squad to a 19-man squad.
Of the 19 players selected, 16 play their domestic rugby league in Cumbria with the only exceptions being Super League trio of Ellis Gillam at Toulouse, Brad Singleton at Castleford, and Harvie Hill of Hull FC.
Plenty more Super League faces had been named in the initial 30-man training squad including a number of young talents such as Warrington’s Zack Gardner, Wakefield’s Noah High and Warrington’s Tom McKinney.
Cumbria will take on Nigeria at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon with ticketing information available here.
