Hull FC make disciplinary appeal decision as one other Super League club challenges ban

Hull FC saw three players banned with another facing a disciplinary tribunal leaving their squad in tatters for a must-win game against Warrington Wolves, however, the Black and Whites have decided not to appeal any of the three bans. Meanwhile, Salford Red Devils have decided to challenge the ban handed to Loghan Lewis.

As if their 18-4 defeat in the derby wasn’t enough, Hull FC suffered heavy consequences when the Match Review Panel made their rulings on Monday with four players disciplined.

Jack Ashworth faces the most severe charge, a Grade E one for striking, with the forward cited for his swinging elbow to the head of Mikey Lewis. It was missed by the referee but the Sky cameras caught it, with commentator Jon Wells labelling it as “disgusting”.

It’s very hard to imagine Ashworth successfully fighting that charge so his Hull FC career looks over given the reports he will sign for Castleford Tigers in 2026.

Hooker Amir Bourough, forward Yusuf Aydin and outside back Jordan Rapana were all handed bans as well with Rapana, who has confirmed his decision to retire at the end of the season, handed two separate one-game bans.

As such, he’s set to miss the rest of the regular season and will only don a Hull FC shirt again if the club make the play-offs – a task that looks incredibly tough given their large injury list, which has now been compounded by four bans.

Hull FC accept Jordan Rapana ban

Despite that, Hull FC have decided against rolling the dice at disciplinary with no challenges made against any of Aydin, Bourouh or Rapana’s bans.

Obviously failed appeals see players handed more points, which in the cases of Aydin and Rapana would have resulted in an extra game added to their current bans.

Not challenging either Bourouh or Aydin makes sense given the fact they don’t want to risk more penalty points ahead of next year, however, with Rapana retiring, the only thing to lose would have been that possible play-off game.

As such, Hull FC clearly believe that they can win both games and make the top six with their limited squad. On top of the four suspended players, John Asiata, Will Pryce, Ligi Sao, Liam Knight, Ed Chamberlain and Herman Ese’ese, among others, are all absent.

Several player have been charged by the RFL’s Match Review Panel following Sunday’s fixture against Hull KR.

Salford Red Devils appeal disciplinary charge

Despite Hull FC deciding not to appeal their bans, one Super League club have challenged yesterday’s ruling and that is Salford Red Devils.

Loghan Lewis was handed a Grade D charge which resulted in a three-match ban, ending his season, however, the club have opted to challenge.

His Grade D charge for Head Contact was worth 12 points but a further three point added as the Catalans player could not return due to injury. On top of his existing penalty points, that was enough for Lewis to land a three-game ban.

It is noteworthy that Lewis was not sin binned with the incident not actually penalised on the night.

Salford will present their case to an Operational Rules Tribunal tonight with four other cases being heard, including Jack Ashworth. Those cases are set to begin at 6:00 pm with updates to come from Serious About Rugby League throughout the evening.

Franck Maria, who was sent off in that Salford game, faces a Grade E charge whilst Sinead Peach is also set to learn her fate after her outburst against the referee in York’s loss to St Helens, having been charged with questioning the integrity of a match official.

Challenge Cup winner and former Leigh Leopards and Hull KR man Ben Reynolds will also answer charges.
