Hull FC ‘lacking confidence’ as Andy Last reacts to ugly loss and makes ‘desperate’ admission

Hull FC were spirited but ultimately lacking confidence in the opinion of interim coach Andy Last as he gave his verdict after the club’s latest loss to Warrington Wolves.

Warrington won 12-4 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, overturning a 4-0 half-time deficit as Hull FC were left to rue errors in attack as they slipped to a fourth straight defeat.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Last assessed the performance and pointed to the club’s lack of spine continuity as to why they struggled to trouble Warrington more.

Last assessed: “A very spirited performance from the boys, we had enough good ball field position in that second half to post more points, but unfortunately we’re just lacking a little bit of confidence and a little bit of continuity in their spine.

“We’re just not quite getting enough quality shapes on, really, to test the Warrington defence, and that was evident again tonight.

“Lots of effort, lots of endeavour, defensively we’re working hard to make sure we have the effort but we’re just lacking a little bit of polish and a little bit of execution at the moment.”

Hull FC ‘desperate’ for next win after fourth straight loss

Despite having plenty of good ball, Hull FC simply weren’t able to execute and Last pointed to one particular play where young full-back Logan Moy tried to force the play rather than allowing it to develop, something he again pointed to as a lack of confidence.

Last explained: “Logan Moy, obviously, out the back, made a similar mistake on a play two against Leigh, and then unfortunately tonight, forced an opportunity where he thought he could get a pass away.

“It was probably not the right time, the right place, we probably just need to build a little bit more pressure, try and fatigue the opposition a little bit more, and then you can start playing a little bit more.

“We’re just, like I say, a little bit low on confidence, trying exceptionally hard, we’ll go back to the drawing board, have a look at it and review it, and try and put in a better performance next week.”

Having lost four on the bounce, Last was asked if that means an end to the club’s play-off hopes and he admitted that as it stands, it’s not something the club are considering.

“I think on the back of losing our last four, we just need to focus on getting that next win,” he said, adding: “I think getting a win in any sort of fashion will really help the confidence, and it just lifts the mood.”

Last continued: “Sam (Burgess) has just spoken there about getting a win, it doesn’t matter how you get it, it just helps when you’re going to work on a Monday morning and you’ve got the two points in the bag.

“We’re just desperate for a win, and we’d happily take the two points tonight, as ugly as it was, we’re just desperate for a win, and that will help with confidence.”
