Rugby league fans split after controversial referee decision in Hull FC v Hull KR clash

Hull FC versus Hull KR has seen the touchpaper lit with Cade Cust sent off for a high shot, causing plenty of debate among rugby league fans.

Cust did not play in the derby two weeks ago in the Challenge Cup after failing a HIA the week previously, however, he would last just 15 minutes at the MKM Stadium today with the half-back sent off early on.

With the score 4-0 after an early Oliver Gildart try, Hull FC started to get on a bit of a roll and a kick in behind towards full-back Arthur Mourgue was chased down by Cade Cust.

The French full-back collected the ball but was immediately hammered by Cust, sparking a huge scuffle and prompting both the referee and video referee to take a look.

It didn’t take many rewatches to see that Cust was high and leading with his shoulder with that shoulder making contact flush on the face of the Frenchman.

Referee Liam Moore explained to Cust that it was forceful and with no mitigation as he flashed the red card, a decision that outraged the majority in the MKM Stadium and has seen rugby league fans split.

Rugby League fans react after Cade Cust red card for Hull FC

The reactions on social media were split, although the majority of those arguing against the decision were understandably Hull FC fans. Here are a few of the reactions from X.

@MFelmingham: “One of the worst I’ve seen for a while!”

@TaylorDanRW: “Don’t like to see 12 v 13 but no mitigation.”

@JamesPearson25: “Want FC to win but it’s a horrendous challenge and had to be a red,”

@OutlawedRugby: “How. How does he pull out of that?”

@joel-robin5on: “Not a red in a million years, rugby league is a laughing stock.”

@paddymarch69: “That is absolutely outrageous. If you cannot be committed into making big hits then we might as well change our sport to tag rugby.”

@GaryHigh1977: “Never a red. Bracing whilst chasing hard for a pretty much 50/50 ball in the in goal area.”

@bates_scott88: “Straight red all day long. Cust didn’t miss.”
