Huddersfield Giants to use loan market as injury list reaches double figures

Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson

Huddersfield Giants will look to use the loan market in the coming weeks, as they aim to replenish bodies amid their current injury woes.

The Giants’ medical list reached double figures this week, with two more first-teamers being ruled out of action.

Sam Halsall and Zac Woolford will both miss this week’s trip to Hull KR, with winger Halsall set for a period of six weeks on the sidelines.

Sam Hewitt will return from suspension this week, in what will be a boost to the forward pack, but as it stands, the club are currently missing their starting number one, two, five, seven, nine, 13 and 15 – as well as a number of other depth options.

With that in mind, Robinson has been forced to look on the market in order to strengthen his current side, though given the time of year, clubs are reluctant to let their players leave.

Tanguy Zenon recently joined the Claret and Gold outfit from Halifax Panthers, and made his debut in defeat to Castleford, and Robinson is looking for further recruits in the coming weeks.

Huddersfield Giants look to bring in loan players

Asked in a pre-match press conference, whether short-term recruitment would be an option, the boss said:

“Very much so. I think apart from the reserve lads and some fringe academy lads, we’re down to the last one or two within the first team who actually have a first team contract.

“Obviously we’ve started looking and having a little bit of a scope at what is available and what’s out there in the positions we need.

“It makes it very difficult when you’re only a few rounds into the year and a lot of clubs are not willing to let people go, especially with a cup game on the horizon.”

He added: “I don’t think any team would be immune to missing seven or eight of your starting 13 so it does make it difficult but when one door closes, another door opens for somebody else. Somebody on the fringe or a younger lad will get an opportunity to play and we can see what they’re about.”
