Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson is assessing the club’s current injury crisis as two more Giants players join their absentee list.
The Giants are already without Tui Lolohea, Adam Swift, Harry Ruston, Matty English, George King, Niall Evalds, Zac Woolford, Adam Clune and Jack Murchie in an extensive list, making up over half of their usual starting line-up.
Now, loanee signing Bill Leyland heads back to Hull KR before he even got to finish a game, and forward Fenton Rogers, who has been one of Huddersfield’s only Super League ever-presents in 2025, is out for a number of months.
The Giants boss shared some updates about his latest squad absentees to BBC Radio Leeds, with Rogers a long-term concern for his side.
He said: “From last week, we obviously and unfortunately lost Fenton Rogers, which looks like it’s his Lisfranc (mid-foot). He’s going to be a fair few months on the sidelines.
“We’re already a depleted middle squad, so it’s really unfortunate news, not only for us as a group but also for Fenny.
“He’s a young, aggressive, tough middle. I feel like the more games he plays, the better he’ll become. He’d been getting some decent minutes in.”
Huddersfield had only just got Bill Leyland on loan from Hull KR and the hooker was unable to make it thorough a full game, who started on the bench in the game against Catalans Dragons.
The Huddersfield Giants boss added: “Leyland, it was the Giants’ curse unfortunately. He went on the field, and with his very first tackle, he knocked himself out. It’s only on reflection that I look back, I didn’t actually see it at the time.
“I went to him at half-time and he looked really dazed, like he didn’t really know where he was. It was me who actually went to the doctor, the doc checked him out and could tell he was sparked out.
“Once again, that’s put a little bit of pressure on us, we managed to get a loan signing in, and as soon as we get him in, he’s back out.”
Huddersfield Giants boss welcomes return of forward who he thinks has England potential
However, there is some good news for Giants fans as Oliver Wilson returns from his two-match ban.
Wilson has been a standout in a struggling Giants side and his coach believes that if he were in a winning side, he’d be in line for an England call-up at the end of the season.
He finished: “Oliver Wilson is off his ban, he’s probably been one of our best forwards this year. Although he’s been in a beaten side, I think he’s been really good. His carries are phenomenal and he whacks in defence.
“I think England selectors should always be looking at each and every team and making opinions not on the team’s performance but on the individual’s performance.
“I think if we were on the front foot and scoring 40 points every week, I think he’d be even better and he’d probably stand out even more so.
“The fact he’s doing that when we’re on the backfoot, he definitely should be a selection headache for Shaun Wane.”
With the Giants’ injury crisis, Robinson said they’re looking into, particularly the number of soft tissue injuries they’re having and assessing everything from their 4G pitch to recovery.
However, a number of their injuries have been one-off incidents, such as Niall Evalds’ foot break, Leyland’s head knock on the first tackle, and Zac Woolford’s going over on his ankle twice in one match.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Huddersfield Giants as they head to AMT Headingly on Good Friday to face Leeds Rhinos.
