Huddersfield Giants star George Flanagan reveals ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ as injury update issued

Huddersfield Giants full-back George Flanagan has shared an update on his injury recovery with the young star confirming there’s ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Flanagan was in electric form to start the season as he scored five tries in four Super League appearances but it was in the process of scoring that he sustained a severe syndesmosis injury that required surgery and left the 21-year-old in a boot.

That happened two months ago, on the 8th of March, and Flanagan has now spoken on the Huddersfield Giants YouTube channel to provide an injury update, though no timeline for a return was speculated.

The full-back said: “It’s going well, I’m about seven weeks post-surgery now so it’s been a long process but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

“I’m back running on the AlterG (anti-gravity treadmill) and I’ll hopefully get back on the field Friday. Get the boots back on and run with the physios, a few more of them then get back into training. I can’t wait.”

Huddersfield Giants star nearing return after two months out

When Flanagan does return to full training, he’ll be working under a new head coach with the Giants having confirmed Jim Lenihan on a long-term contract with the Queensland Cup coach set to link up with Huddersfield imminently.

Flanagan also spoke on the positive impact of his teammates but also his dad, of whom he is named after, with George Flanagan Sr a hugely experienced rugby league player.

“I’ve been positive around the boys. The boys were all there for me when I got the injury and they’ve all been very supportive,” Flanagan said.

“My dad’s been good with me the whole time. He’s got a lot of experience and he’s overcome injuries in his career, so he’s been there supporting me and putting me on the right track.”

Whilst he didn’t speak on when exactly he could return, Flanagan did admit: “There’s definitely light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not going to be too long now hopefully and when I do eventually put the shirt back on, I’ll be over the moon because it’s been a tough seven or eight weeks out.”

George Flanagan on injury rollercoaster

Injury was a new experience for Flanagan and he’s admitted that he wasn’t clear on what to expect, with the rollercoaster of positive updates and setbacks something he’s experiencing for the first time.

He conceded: “I didn’t know what to expect, it’s my first real injury so I didn’t know how to overcome certain stuff.

“There have been good days and there have been bad days. Sometimes I can come in on a morning and be set back a week or I could be in front a week, it’s about overcoming everything like that.”

The full-back also paid full credit to the club’s medical team, calling them ‘class’ and adding: “They’ve all been very good and there’s a little bit of time to get back on field yet but so far they’ve been absolutely amazing with me.

“They’ve probably had to rein me in a little bit because I’ve been pushing a bit further but it’s all in the best interests.”
