Huddersfield Giants stadium move on hold as preferred location revealed amid development talks

Could Huddersfield Giants new stadium plans be halted?

Huddersfield Giants chairman Ken Davy has shared that currently, the club’s stadium move is on hold until he can get planning permission for the new one.

The Giants had thought to have secured a move temporarily to Halifax Panthers’ The Shay from next season, but the end goal is to build a new stadium in Huddersfield.

However, he’s now admitted in an interview with Huddersfield Hub that they won’t even move out of the John Smith’s Stadium until he can finalise a deal on the plot of land for their new stadium.

Davy has a preferred site but won’t hand over the John Smith’s to Huddersfield Town until he can get the groundwork done on the plot now owned by Kirklees Council.

The vacant former gasworks site off St Andrew’s Road, close by to their current stadium, is the perfect plot for an 8,000-capacity stadium, which is Davy’s main goal.

Huddersfield Giants chairman on the Giants’ future stadium plans

In an interview with Huddersfield Hub, he said: “I don’t want my legacy to be that I took Huddersfield Rugby League Club out of Huddersfield – where the game was born – and could not get back.

“I have consistently said The Shay was a temporary solution, and I wanted to help Kevin Nagle and Huddersfield Town by moving out earlier because it will take a few years to build a new stadium.

“Kevin is very keen to develop the site around the stadium – there’s 50 acres – and that will be very beneficial to Kirklees and the people of Huddersfield.

“So we want it all to happen, but we can’t take the risk of leaving and not having an approved site for a new stadium.

“I am not going to be responsible for taking the Huddersfield Giants away from Huddersfield on a permanent basis. That simply won’t happen.”

Whilst there are other options being explored, the St Andrew’s Road plot is Davy’s preferred choice.

However, with no planning permission in place for a new stadium, it looks like the Giants could remain at the John Smith’s Stadium for at least another season.

Is 8000 a good choice for capacity? If you take Hull KR as a model, their ground is bursting at the seams. Leigh see good crowds. Wakefield are getting good attendances, Catalans pack the ground, Castleford have reasonable crowds. It’s only really Salford that don’t get the crowds. Maybe there should be a stadium minimum capacity requirement of say 12500, not too big, but bug enough to cope with success. Then the bigger clubs, Wigan, Leeds, Hull FC who can pack in over 20,000 be used for bigger matches, when bumper crowds can be guaranteed. Like they do in Australia when bigger matches are played at Stadium Australia , Lang Park, or the Sydney Football Stadium to accommodate the crowds.

But, we’re far too parochial, clubs determined to be tge niggest fish in a tiny pond, anything but allow for growth. So we continue to stagnate, growth remains illusive.
