Huddersfield Giants have taken advantage of their vacant overseas quota spot by signing a “powerhouse” forward from Down Under.
The Giants were one of the only teams in Super League to have a vacant overseas quota space and realistically, they were the only side who could utilise it.
Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils are the other sides but Wigan are too full on the salary cap whilst Salford are having their own financial issues, whereas Huddersfield had both quota and cap space and they’ve used that now to sign Tristan Powell.
Huddersfield have confirmed the signing of “powerhouse” Tristan Powell on a deal until the end of the 2027 season with Giants’ head coach Luke Robinson admitting that the 24-year-old has been on the club’s radar for some time.
Powell has just one NRL appearance but he’s been among the most consistent performers in the Queensland Cup, so much so that he earned that NRL debut in 2024 whilst at Melbourne Storm.

The prop left Brisbane Tigers at the end of 2024 and made the switch to Burleigh Bears, who he has made seven appearances for this season, but he’s now set for Super League.
Powell brings plenty of experience at the Queensland Cup level having played 63 games, whilst winning the competition back in 2023 with Brisbane Tigers, for whom he was named player of the year two years running.
Speaking on the move to Huddersfield, Powell said: “I’m buzzing to have made the move, I’m really excited to show what I can do for the Giants and in the Super League, really thankful to Luke Robinson and the Giants for the opportunity.
“It’s an exciting time for me, I’m looking forward to meeting the lads, unfortunately the game on Friday came a bit too soon for me but hopefully I’ll be involved for the next one.”
Luke Robinson added: “He’s someone that I’ve admired for a while, we looked at him when I first became permanent head coach but we couldn’t get it done at the time, but we kept him on our radar and it became available now for us to proceed with.
“We approached him and he wanted to come over, he’s got a great work ethic and Ryan Hinchcliffe who works with him and he spoke about how he can add to our group, that he’s still young and can improve.
“Tristan has some good ball playing in him too which can only enhance our attack, we’re looking forward to seeing how he performs for us.”
