Huddersfield Giants performing like a ‘Championship outfit in every regard’ as pundits take aim

Huddersfield Giants lost a tenth consecutive game when they fell to York Knights at Magic Weekend and their status in Super League is now coming under serious question.

The Giants reportedly expect to be in Super League next season, something that is determined by IMG gradings, however, they’re looking like a Championship side in the opinion of Jon Wilkin.

Speaking on Sky Sports to assess the Giants’ drab 36-24 loss to York Knights, 12 points of which came late on when the game was already lost, Wilkin asked: “In some ways, these consolation tries from Huddersfield, what do they matter?

“York had four or five players who played eight or nine out of ten, then you had Huddersfield who had zero players anywhere near that level of performance.

“York just got into a groove, they were dominating every facet of the game at this stage and Huddersfield’s edge defence is absolutely non-existent. It comes up with nothing, it does nothing, there’s no pressure from the inside, there’s no decisive decisions on the end of it.”

Huddersfield Giants hammered by pundits after drab Magic Weekend performance

Those comments were made immediately after the match but speaking on Sky’s Sunday coverage, just under 24 hours after the Giants’ defeat, Wilkin went even harder on Huddersfield.

“I thought they looked like a Championship outfit in every regard,” he exclaimed.

“The difference between their best and their worst is just too vast. They were bullied by York, physically dominated by York, put to the sword by York with such simplicity, it was alarming for me.”

Also alarming was how little George Flanagan was involved with the jewel of the Huddersfield crown not getting involved until very late on in the game as he scored one of the consolation tries.

Sam Tomkins asked: “You’ve got a player like George Flanagan, why is he not in this position more? You’ve got one of the best young full-backs, give him the ball!

“Huddersfield never got a foothold in this game. As soon as Huddersfield looked like doing anything, York bounced back.

“It was really disappointing from Huddersfield.”
