After a saga that has taken almost the whole season to reach a verdict, Huddersfield Giants owner, Ken Davy, is now one step closer to acquiring a new stadium for the club.
The future usage and the ownership of The Shay is a topic that has gone on throughout 2025, and we may finally be about to witness a conclusion.
The ground, which currently plays host to Halifax Panthers and FC Halifax Town, was originally outlined by Davy as a temporary home for the Giants, whilst the club built a brand-new stadium that suited them better.
Currently, the Claret and Gold play out of the Accu Stadium, home of Huddersfield Town, which has a capacity of over 24,000. Huddersfield only average a home attendance of 4,226, meaning their current venue is far too big for their needs.
Davy’s bid to buy The Shay was approved in March, but was not implemented straight away. Although, he has already helped fund upgrades to the ground including a brand-new pitch and an improved drainage system to help prevent waterlogging.
Regardless of the upgrades brought in by the 84-year-old, he confirmed in September that the Giants would be staying put at the Accu for another year, in what will be their final season at the stadium.
The Shay stadium latest amid Huddersfield Giants owner’s planned takeover
Despite confirming last week that the sale of The Shay was yet to be completed, Calderdale council have now said that plans are in place for Davy’s takeover to go ahead.
Giving a statement to a local news outlet, the Council said: “Cabinet’s decision from March 17, 2025 – to progress the proposal as submitted by Ken Davy/Huddersfield Giants for the acquisition of the Shay, with a legal restriction to keep it as a sporting stadium – is being implemented.
“Whilst there has been no timescale set, things are moving forward to support the future of the venue for our local clubs.”
Whilst it is good news for Davy and the Giants, if Huddersfield are to utilise the ground in Super League, more upgrades will need to be done to make it fit for the top flight. As mentioned, some work has already been done, but the owner will need to keep improving his new purchase for them to be able to make use of it.
