Huddersfield Giants man opens up on injury frustration and Dewsbury factor

The Super League season is finally starting to look up for Adam Clune and Huddersfield Giants as the half-back starts to build continuity and consistency.

It’s been a frustrating season for Clune so far, with injury ensuring he played in just one of Huddersfield’s first nine Super League games. The Australian missed much of pre-season as he battled to overcome a calf injury and after making an appearance against Wigan Warriors in March, he was ruled out for another two months with a hamstring issue.

He eventually made a return to action at Magic Weekend and helped the Giants to their first win of the season over Hull FC and he has featured in the three games that have followed, with the scrum-half hopeful that his injury problems are behind him.

As such, he’s only just starting to build understandings with some of his teammates as Huddersfield strive to find Super League traction.

“It’s good to be back,” Clune told Huddersfield Giants. “A bit of a long stint on the sidelines so it was frustrating start to the year, not just for me but the whole team.

“It’s nice to be back playing and training with the team and we’re looking to build some combinations. We’re probably starting later than we would have liked obviously but it’s just nice to be playing. I love being out with the team and playing so that’s why I do it.

“It’s been a bit of a challenge but that’s what happens, every team has injuries and we’ve had to face that challenge probably more than we would have liked. It’s good to get reps in and hopefully that will benefit us over the second half of this year.”

Adam Clune previews Huddersfield Giants’ Wigan Warriors challenge

Clune looks set to start his fifth straight game this weekend when Huddersfield host Wigan Warriors in Dewsbury with their home stadium being unavailable. It promises to be a tricky contest for the Giants, with Wigan on an eight-game winning streak, but the change of stadium might just be a factor.

“Any time you play Wigan it’s always a challenge,” Clune added. “They’ve been the best team for a number of years now, they have strike all across the park and a great forward pack so it’s important for us to do the little things right and it’s a bit of a challenge for us this week on a smaller field so it will be an interesting contest and I’m keen to see how it plays out.”
