One of Huddersfield Giants’ most versatile players has left the club, ending a six-year stint in Claret and Gold.
Ashton Golding, who joined the Giants for the start of the 2020 season, has confirmed that he will be departing the Accu Stadium in order to pursue other opportunities.
Signing from Leeds Rhinos, the hooker, who has played a range of positions in his career, made just over 100 appearances for the Fartown side, scoring 10 tries.
He was part of the squad that made the Challenge Cup Final in 2022, and came off the bench in defeat to Wigan Warriors at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Reports elsewhere linked him with an early exit, with Golding still having another two full seasons on his contract. That has now been confirmed, and will be the Giants’ seventh exit since the end of the campaign.
Huddersfield’s Director of Rugby, Andy Kelly, commented on his exit, saying: “This is a mutual agreement between both parties, Ashton will look to secure his future elsewhere on a longer agreement, and we wish him well and thank him for his efforts at the Giants, he was well liked within the club and the community, and always gave 100% to the cause.”
Departing Huddersfield Giants player gives farewell message
In a parting statement that explains the exit in his own words, Golding will be forever grateful for the opportunities the Giants have given him, but agrees that it is time for a change in his career.
He said: “Thank you Huddersfield Giants, 2020-2025.
“From the Heights of the Challenge Cup to the unfortunate lows of last season, I always gave my all for the team. I signed with a clear objective to bring silverware to this historic club and I almost did that in 2022, but in rugby league its important to know when you need to move on and it was with that in mind, I asked for a release to explore opportunities elsewhere.
“This has been a respectful transition and I’d like to thank the club for their assistance in making this decision possible, I’d also like to thank the Giants fans for their continued, unwavering support of myself and the team.”
