Huddersfield Giants interim coach puts hand up for full-time role as focus revealed

Huddersfield Giants interim coach Liam Finn has put his hand up to take on the role full-time after a second consecutive Super League win.

The Giants have even managed to lift themselves off the foot of Super League, albeit on points difference, on the back of their two wins with Saturday’s victory over York offering some hope to the club.

Winless through their first five games, the higher-ups at the club decided to swing the axe on Luke Robinson in a move that thrust assistant coach Liam Finn into the hot seat. Since then the Giants have won twice and Finn has made no secret of his intent to be a Super League head coach.

“The club know that my desire is to be a head coach at some point in my career,” Finn said when asked about the vacant role in his post-match presser.

“Whether they decide if now is the right time is up to them.”

Whilst keen to be a head coach, Finn admitted that everything had moved very quickly and that ultimately his focus will be on doing the job to the best of his ability, until he’s told otherwise.

He explained: “Up until 10 days ago, my main focus was on trying to be the best assistant coach I could be and to try and help us get as far up the table as we could, so it’s changed very quickly in a matter of days.

“Ultimately, that is where my head is at but it’s about preparing for Leeds in two weeks time, as it was about preparing for York today.”

“I don’t know,” Finn admitted when asking if he was ‘formally’ in the running or the role.

“I don’t know the process and I don’t really need to know. The club know that I’m doing the best job that I can and whatever they ask me to do moving forward, I’ll gladly be doing that to the best of my ability.”

Finn also allayed any major injury concerns after both Connor Wrench and Tanguy Zenon left the field late on, with Finn believing the decisions to be ‘more precautionary’ than anything else.
