Four Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC stand-outs as returning star guides Luke Robinson’s side to first win

Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC

Huddersfield Giants finally got their first win of the Super League season as they beat Hull FC at Magic Weekend.

Hull FC missed out on a chance to move back into the top four as their ill-discipline proved costly once again with Liam Knight’s red card costing them as they fell to a 12-10 loss at St James Park.

With some troops back, particularly the return of Adam Clune, Huddersfield looked a far more connected side and they took advantage of a Hull FC side who seemed to implode.

Knight’s red card at 8-6 up and on the eve of half-time ensured the Black and Whites played a man down and ultimately they couldn’t overcome that as Huddersfield extended their lead and held on to land their first win of the season.

Here are four players who caught our eye from the match.

George Flanagan Jr – Huddersfield Giants

The youngster has been forced out of position in recent weeks and made to play in the halves but he reverted back to his natural full-back role today, with Jacob Gagai shifting to the wing. That move proved genius from Luke Robinson with Flanagan having his strongest game yet in a Huddersfield Giants jersey.

He was safe under the high ball throughout with his claim on the 70th minute one of the best you’ll see this season. He also made an incredible one-on-one try-saving tackle against Cade Cust whilst kicking four crucial points.

Adam Clune – Huddersfield Giants

Flanagan had been thrust into the halves recently due to the absence of Clune who Huddersfield had missed plenty. Just how much the Giants had missed their number seven became clear today as they proved to be a completely different team with the former NRL man pulling the strings.

Their best performance so far this season before today came against Wigan and it’s no surprise that Clune was involved that day as well with the Australian making them look a totally different side. Topping off his performance was his magnificent cut-out pass for Jacob Gagai’s try, the type of pass few players in Super League can execute.

Leroy Cudjoe – Huddersfield Giants

The Huddersfield skipper is an absolute Super League stalwart but he is still performing at a high level. He made his Magic Weekend debut in 2010 which showcases his longevity but the class is still there.

His line break in the first half left him with a decision but with no passing options, he ran over Will Pryce to score the Giants first try and set them on the way for their first win of the season.

Davy Litten – Hull FC

Hull FC were the victims of their own poor discipline with Liam Knight’s red card ensuring they fought an uphill battle all second half but they still had some standouts, with Litten chief among those.

The youngster impressed at centre whilst the likes of Hardaker and Chamberlain moved into the second-row. His stutter step to fool the defender before executing an offload for Lewis Martin’s try was one of the plays of the game.
