Huddersfield Giants hit back in perfect fashion after strange Warrington Wolves tweet

Huddersfield Giants have hit back at Warrington Wolves after a strange tweet from Wire went viral as it backfired on them.

The sides faced off on Saturday afternoon in a match that wasn’t just the battle of the Burgess brothers, Sam and Tom, but also of the King brothers, with Toby and George lining up for Wire and Huddersfield, respectively.

It was both Tom Burgess and George King who had the last laughs as Huddersfield put in a season-best performance to win 24-16 against a misfiring Warrington, with that win being only the Giants second of the season.

They had previously caused an upset when beating Hull FC at Magic Weekend but on the road against Wire, they were big underdogs despite Sam Burgess’ side’s struggling form.

Defeat makes it seven losses in nine in Super League but such poor form certainly didn’t stop the Warrington Wolves social media admin from acting out ahead of the game.

Warrington Wolves tweet receives widespread fan backlash

Outlining the day’s events at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday, Warrington posted a graphic confirming when each game would kick off and what events were around the ground as they ran a ‘Kid for a Quid’ promotion.

Confirming ‘JJ’s Ices Ice Cream’ to be outside the West Stand, Huddersfield Giants replied making light of the warm weather that England is going through as they asked if they could ‘put our JJ’s Ice Cream order in now’.

To that, Warrington hit back: “Sure, for your fans it’ll only be a small order”, a tasteless dig at the Giants’ poor home attendance in a tweet that has massively come back to bite them.

The reply was already attracting plenty of criticism from fans with some labelling it ‘pathetic’, ‘classless’ and ‘an embarrassment’.

More embarrassing was when Huddersfield replied post-match having caused the upset, simply posting a picture of the JJ’s Ice Cream seller celebrating.

Whilst IMG points do come from digital interactions, taking aim at a rival club who are openly trying to improve their fan atmosphere by planning to build a new stadium feels out-of-touch, particularly if you then get beat by that team.

Despite the widespread backlash from those on social media, the tweet actually outperformed any other post on Warrington Wolves’ X page in respect of views as a whopping 135,000, and counting, saw it. Comparatively, just just 47,800 have seen the club’s full-time post announcing their defeat.

The club have also copped criticism for their bizarre ‘Free Wolfie’ movement after reporting that their club mascot had sustained an RFL charge. Continuing that, black T-Shirts were fired into the crowd with white text stating ‘Wolfie is innocent!’.

It’s fair to say it’s a strange marketing gimmick and one that would land an awful lot better if results weren’t as poor as they currently are.
