After Huddersfield Giants made the decision to sack Luke Robinson, we’ve looked at who the club could seek to replace their head coach.
Robinson saw his tenure at the Accu Stadium come to an end with Huddersfield releasing a brief and somewhat blunt statement on Sunday to confirm his departure from the Giants.
That statement was so blunt in fact that it offered no thanks to someone who had served the club as a player and coach, and instead added that they were seeking ‘immediate expressions of interest in the position‘, with details on who to contact also included.
For the time being, Andy Kelly will take charge of all first team matters and that’s likely to include Saturday’s away clash with Wigan Warriors.
With the Giants seemingly in a rush to move on and appoint Robinson’s successor, we’ve picked out five possible candidates for the job including two from Down Under.
Who could Huddersfield Giants appoint as head coach?
Danny McGuire
The Giants have just got rid of a young coach but there is another waiting in the wings who was also perhaps sacked before having a true crack at it, and that is Danny McGuire.
It’s unclear if McGuire would want to immediately jump back into a head coach role after his Castleford Tigers exit but he brings plenty to the table in terms of his attacking mindset but also a winning mindset.
Leroy Cudjoe
Currently an assistant at the club, Cudjoe is also in charge of academy affairs and he could well be a contender for this role as the Giants appointed Luke Robinson from a similar pathway.
Admittedly Robinson was longer out of the game and perhaps more experienced as a coach but Cudjoe bleeds claret and amber, though that didn’t necessarily do Luke Robinson any good.
Jim Lenihan
The first of the overseas options and it’s someone with ties to Huddersfield, as Jim Lenihan played for the Giants back in 1999. He was recently reported as a candidate for the Castleford Tigers job showcasing that there is a desire for him to coach in England.
A potential stumbling block would be that since then, he’s been appointed as head coach of Brisbane Tigers but the allure of a Super League gig could tempt him.
Brett Hodgson
Another who is in a role Down Under but has a tie with the Giants and it’s an even stronger one with Hodgson having played for Huddersfield for two seasons, winning the Man of Steel award with them in 2009.
He has coached in Super League at Hull FC and is someone thought to be keen on a top job though he’s currently an assistant to Benji Marshall at Wests Tigers. Whether a return to his former club in a head coaching role is enough to draw him to leave is to be seen.
