Huddersfield Giants have confirmed the venue for their home clash with Wigan Warriors next month. The Giants have been forced to play the Super League clash away from their usual home ground with the June 14 contest clashing with Stereophonics’ gig at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The club have been on the lookout for a new ground to play the game at and they have now reached a deal to use Dewsbury Rams’ ground for the fixture. As such, Huddersfield and Wigan fans will have to make the journey to Crown Flatt to watch the round 14 contest.
Crown Flatt, or the FLAIR Stadium as it is known for commercial purposes, is just over 13 miles from the John Smith’s Stadium, ensuring it should be a short drive for most home supporters. However, the ground holds just 5,100 supporters, meaning it could be a squeeze to fit fans in, should Wigan travel across the Pennines in large numbers.
The Giants have confirmed the game will kick off at 3pm as originally scheduled.
Huddersfield Giants to leave John Smith’s Stadium
This will be the last season Huddersfield will spent at the John Smith’s Stadium, with the club moving away from the ground that has been their home since 1994. A decline in attendances has ensured the stadium is far too big for the Giants and from next year they will be playing their home games at The Shay.
The Shay is the home of Halifax Panthers but Giants owner Ken Davy in the process of purchasing the stadium and that will allow Huddersfield to groundshare with the Championship side. That will only be the case until their new purpose built stadium has been completed, with Huddersfield hoping to move into a ground which is much more suited to their needs as a club.
The Giants picked up their first win of the Super League season last time out against Hull FC and they have the difficult task of trying to build on that against league leaders Hull KR this Saturday. It doesn’t get any easier for Luke Robinson’s side, either, with games against St Helens and Leigh Leopards coming before they face off with Wigan at Dewsbury.
