Huddersfield Giants have confirmed their new head coach with the Super League club finally replacing Luke Robinson following his dismissal in March.

The Giants have appointed Jim Lenihan as their new head coach with the 52-year-old returning to the club that he played for back in 1999, with the outside back scoring 12 tries in his 21-game stint at Huddersfield.

Lenihan was reportedly in the mix for the Castleford Tigers job which then went to Ryan Carr and whilst his name has been mentioned for this Giants job, there was uncertainty if he would make the switch to Super League considering the fact he became head coach of Queensland Cup side Brisbane Tigers at the start of this year.

Despite that, Lenihan has now swapped Brisbane for Huddersfield with the Giants appointing their former player on what they’ve described as ‘a long-term contract’.

A club statement revealed: “Huddersfield Giants are delighted to announce the appointment of Jim Lenihan as the club’s new Head Coach on a long term contract.”

Lenihan’s hiring is subject to visa clearances with the Australian set to link up with the club immediately once those matters are sorted.

The club statement confirmed it was an appointment in line with their current ‘Giants Unleashed’ era with Lenihan said to be one of several outstanding candidates.

Huddersfield said: “Lenihan, who is no stranger to the club having featured 21 times during the 1999 season, scoring numerous tries, will now become our Head Coach, working alongside our performance staff.

“The Huddersfield Giants received some outstanding applications from candidates, but it was Lenihan’s vision for the club, which aligned with the clubs as we embark on this Unleashed journey, as being the perfect fit.”
