Huddersfield Giants coach reveals Adam Swift latest as “tough” Oliver Russell decision revealed

Huddersfield Giants welcome back winger Adam Swift to the squad this week, after he has missed the opening six rounds of the season through injury.

The former St Helens and Hull FC man featured in the club’s Challenge Cup round three victory over Hunslet, and was named in the 21 for the season opener, however he is yet to take to the field in Super League 2026.

Jacob Douglas has been brought in from St Helens on a season-long loan, whilst Tanguy Zenon has taken up the opposite flank meaning there is some competition for places in the Giants side, something they have little experience of over the past 12 months.

Swift has scored 28 tries in 31 matches for Huddersfield after joining ahead of 2024. He is one of two players who could potentially make the final 17 on Saturday, should they get through the final day of training.

Oliver Russell is another who could return, having missed out last week due to Adam Clune’s inclusion. That decision proved to be fruitful with Clune having a huge say in the club’s victory over Wigan Warriors, and in his final play before being substituted, scored a try to extend their lead with 20 minutes to go.

Commenting on both Swift and Russell, interim boss Liam Finn gave the latest on whether either player could feature against York Knights.

Asked by the press today [Thursday] if there is any need to change a winning side, he replied: “There is scope to change. Whether you want to change a team that’s done the job too much, I’m not sure.

“We haven’t got loads and loads of people that are fit and outside the team that played last week anyway. So in that regard, there isn’t an awful lot of opportunity to change personnel.

“At the same time, those lads that played last week should be buoyant and wanting to get out there as quickly again as possible.”

“Russ [Oli Russell] was unfortunate to be the one left out last week when we got ‘Cluney’ back.

“I spoke to him during the week and it was a tough call because the week before against Bradford, he did a lot of things that we asked him to do in terms of controlling field position with his kicking game.

“That was a tough conversation, but he’s certainly in and amongst it to play, especially if any of the pivots are struggling with anything or anything like that.

“Swifty’s being named in the squad. He’s still 50-50 whether we get him out there on Saturday because he’s still got a couple of boxes to tick, but he should be there or thereabouts.”
