Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson has admitted that he’s bored of talking about injuries though they’ve forced the club into some drastic measures.
The Giants headed into Sunday’s game against Hull KR, which they lost 32-6, without ten first-team players and they lost at least two more with both George Flanagan and Matty English suffering bruising blows in the loss.
Robinson confirmed post-match that Flanagan was in a boot whilst Matty English was left in a knee brace after a Karl Lawton cannonball tackle, however, two other players suffered injury issues with Ollie Russell and Kieran Rush both leaving the field.
Defeat to Hull KR means Huddersfield are the only side without a win so far this season and when asked how concerning the table was, Robinson spoke further on how injuries are impacting his side’s ability to improve with all three top coaches forced to train this week because of how low the club were on bodies.
“Of course we’re concerned, we want to get our first win on the board and it all starts in training,” Robinson told Sky Sports.
“(It’s about) putting the wrongs right in training each and every week but it’s very difficult when you don’t have a full team.
“This week in training, I put the boots back on. Liam Finn, my assistant, put the boots back on and so did Leroy Cudjoe. All three coaches had to pretty much play this week and train with the group, or we couldn’t have got a session on. That probably shows you where we’re at at the moment.”
Huddersfield Giants’ injury issues laid bare
With Hull KR next up in the Challenge Cup, Robinson conceded that his side will need to consolidate and regroup, something that will be hard with 12 first-team players out.
The Giants coach said: “For us, it’s just about just consolidating a little bit of our game and how we need to play, because I thought we were rubbish, because we weren’t very good with the ball. I think we put our defence under too much pressure.
“When you are lacking experience, and look, I think that’s like 12 men now that we’ve got missing from the squad but if I’m honest, I’m bored of talking about injuries.
“I’m actually bored of talking about it, I don’t really want to talk about it, but it’s just a stone-cold fact that we’re missing sort of 12 of our starting 17 players, and when you’ve got that experience missing, you need to hold the ball. You need to understand that you’re not going to be able to just roll teams, you’ve got to actually do the hard stuff and do the basics really well, so we’ve got to get back to the drawing board.
“If we can get some players on the training field this week, fingers crossed, we can get some players on the training field and come back there better next week.”
