Huddersfield Giants announce 2026 stadium plans as The Shay decision made

After a year-long cycle of uncertainty around where they will be playing next season, Huddersfield Giants have announced where they will play their home games in 2026.

The saga goes back to as early as October of last year, where Giants owner Ken Davy announced he wanted to build a new purpose-build stadia for Huddersfield to use that would be more suited to their needs.

However, Davy wanted Huddersfield to leave the Accu Stadium, their home for the past 1994, as soon as possible, and wanted to find a temporary home whilst the new stadium works were being completed.

The Shay Stadium, home of Championship side Halifax Panthers and National League football side FC Halifax Town, is in progress to be taken over by the Giants chairman, after a successful application in March. The full takeover is not complete yet, but Davy hopes he will soon own the Calderdale-based facility.

Significant money has been invested into his new purchase, with the 84-year-old funding half of the overall cost of the new pitch that was recently re-laid at the ground.

Although, his Huddersfield side won’t get to run out on the new Shay pitch, for this season at least, after the Giants announced at their awards evening last night they will remain at the Accu Stadium for another year, in what will be their last season inside the 24,000+ seater stadium.

Speaking at the event, in which the career of Giants legend Leroy Cudjoe was celebrated profoundly, Davy made the following statement:

“The upcoming 2026 season will be our last season at the Accu and in 2027 we will have a new home base for which could be a number of options at this stage.

“The purchase of the Shay has not been completed and whilst I remain confident that it will be – the timeframe to get that stadium up to Super League standard for next season is quite simply – impossible. Therefore we will remain at the ACCU stadium.  We will of course have the usual period of absence for re seeding and hopefully a concert, so subject to the way the fixture list falls we will play at least one game on the road as we did so successfully this season.

“I am told that the petition for us to be allowed to develop the gasworks street site (which remains our preferred option) has reached the number whereby it will be debated by Kirklees Council and I sincerely hope that the outcome of that will bring positive news.

“The reality is that a new stadium, with its planned focus on sporting excellence, research and health and wellbeing for the community, has the potential to be a huge asset for the Town, as well as to delivering high quality sporting facilities for the Giants and the many other potential users of its all weather facilities.
