How Warrington Wolves could line up vs Castleford Tigers with Matty Ashton, full-back and bench calls to be made

Warrington Wolves return to Super League action after a hefty Challenge Cup win over Championship side Goole Vikings.

Head coach Sam Burgess earned bragging rights over former teammate Scott Taylor, as his side secured a 78-10 victory to progress to the quarter-finals.

They will face Leigh Leopards in the last eight, and will do so on the weekend of April 11-12, but before that they have three league games to get through, with the first being a home tie against Castleford Tigers this weekend.

Warrington picked up a number of injuries in the game against Goole, leaving Burgess forced to make changes for when they welcome the West Yorkshire outfit.

Wire are one of two teams to remain unbeaten in 2026, as they join Wigan Warriors as the sides to achieve victory in every game, though they have played one tie less due to Hull KR’s involvement in the World Club Challenge.

Warrington Wolves predicted line-up

Cai Taylor-Wray suffered a hamstring injury in training, and missed the game against Goole as a result. The exciting young full-back is set for around six weeks on the sidelines, meaning that Burgess will have to replace the number one for the next month or so.

Josh Thewlis looks to be the man to take the shirt, with the winger switching from wing to full-back against Goole and did so last season, too. What makes this decision easier is that Matty Ashton is fit and available for selection, so there is an open spot on the wing for him to make his long-awaited return from injury.

The rest of the back line and half-backs should remain the same as the side that beat York Knights two weeks ago, whilst Luke Yates, Danny Walker and Liam Byrne are expected to keep their place in the starting side.

James Bentley made his return from injury against Goole, giving Burgess a selection headache in the back row, though Sam Stone’s performances of late are worthy of him retaining his place in the 13.

Toafofoa Sipley will miss the next few weeks with a knee injury, so there is a space for Bentley on the bench, but with Kelepi Tanginoa already a permanent feature in the interchanges, the boss may opt to avoid having two back rowers as substitutes.

Jordy Crowther is another man who is injured, whilst young forward Max Wood impressed in Cup action, and has also been excelling in the reserves competition, so he could get his first Super League opportunity of the season.

Warrington Wolves predicted side to face Castleford Tigers: Josh Thewlis; Josh Smith, Toby King, Albert Hopoate, Matty Ashton; George Williams, Marc Sneyd; Luke Yates, Danny Walker, Liam Byrne; James Harrison, Sam Stone; Ben Currie

Bench: Sam Powell, Max Wood, Joe Philbin, Kelepi Tanginoa
