Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin believes Leeds Rhinos man Kallum Watkins has ‘something to offer’ Shaun Wane ahead of his autumn’s Ashes series.
Watkins has collected 29 international caps over the course of his illustrious career so far but his last came back in 2022, when England were cruelly dumped out of the Rugby League World Cup. However, the 34-year-old has been one of the stand out performers of the Super League season since making the switch back to Leeds Rhinos from Salford Red Devils.
That move came about in April, and he has made nine appearances in blue and amber since, with three tries coming along the way. Two of those came on Friday night as Watkins rolled back the years with a performance that ought to have made Wane sit up and take notice.
The back-rower was exceptional against Leigh Leopards, helping his side to a 48-30 win with his second effort in particular being something to behold.
England aren’t short of options in the back-row, it’s fair to say, with Junior Nsemba, Kai Pearce-Paul, John Bateman, James Batchelor, Ben Currie, Matty Nicholson available to name just a few. And, Watkins isn’t expected to be named in the England squad that will be announced on Monday.
However, Wilkin believes he should be considered, with his knowhow, IQ and leadership assets he can bring to the international set up.
Jon Wilkin on Leeds Rhinos man’s England chances
“I think he’s got something to offer in terms of his experience, his big game experience, his leadership and all of his efforts in the game are flawless,” Wilkin said on Sky Sports in response to a Brian Carney question, after watching Leeds return to third in the Super League table
“You said a word, ‘tidy’, that’s exactly what Kallum Watkins has brought to this Leeds pack. I think they’re a better team when he plays through the middle of the field, he provides a running threat and generates ruck speed when he’s in the middle but flicked to the back-row with just seamless ease, he was so impressive.”
“It deserves that type of celebration” 🙌
