Rugby League News: Hardaker signs, Schofield unhappy with Smith, Hull FC to lose star & Channel 4 numbers

It has been a busy 24 hours with major stories breaking from Super League and the NRL.

Here is a round-up of everything that has happened…

Connor on Hull

Jake Connor spoke to Sky Sports News following Hull FC’s win over Catalans Dragons on Sunday night.

And, in that interview, the maverick fullback detailed what he believes has been Hull’s biggest problem. Read more here.

Four clubs were interested

Leeds Live has revealed that four clubs were interested in signing Zak Hardaker after his exit from Wigan Warriors. Hardaker, of course, left last Friday after previously being dropped by head coach Matt Peet. Read more here.

On Leeds, CEO Gary Hetherington has spoken to the Yorkshire Evening Post about discussions with Hardaker and that they are ‘progressing’.

Schofield unhappy with Smith

Leeds Rhinos legend Garry Schofield has told the League Express that he is unhappy with Leeds’ appointment of Rohan Smith.

Schofield wrote in his column: “While I obviously hope I’m proved wrong, I’m not at all sure Rohan Smith is the right man for such a demanding role.”

Bateman on Hardaker

A Wigan Warriors player has spoken on the issue of Zak Hardaker leaving the club last week on Wigan TV.

That man is, of course, John Bateman who spoke in detail on the issue. Read more here.

Injury corner

Warrington Wolves, Leeds Rhinos, St Helens and Hull FC also suffered injuries at the weekend following some bruising encounters.

Bradford pitch

The Bradford Bulls pitch has come under scrutiny in recent years, but halfback Jordan Lilley spoke to the Telegraph & Argus about the problem.

Sammut update

Barrow Raiders’ Jarrod Sammut was stretchered off with a serious-looking injury against Halifax Panthers at the weekend.

The incident left the former Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity halfback in hospital. Read more here.

Burrow strikes out

Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow has struck out at the government after they have seemingly gone back on their pledge to grant the MND Research £50 million.

Attendances and bans

Super League Round 10 was full of excitement not least from the hordes of fans that flocked to stadiums to watch rugby league. Read more on the attendance numbers here.

The weekend was also full of citations and charges from the Disciplinary Match Review Panel, with five bans handed out to Super League stars. Read more here.

Reynolds’ ban explained and Hull problem

One of those banned by the Disciplinary Match Review Panel was Hull FC halfback Josh Reynolds. The disciplinary minutes revealed why he was banned with a charge that certainly isn’t a good look. Read more here.

That ban compounds the bad luck for Hull who are set to lose one of their stars for this weekend due to a rather unique problem. Read more here.

Channel 4 numbers

The numbers in terms of viewing figures for Sunday’s fixture between Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils have been revealed.

The viewing figures are, in a sense, a blow considering how great the enthusiasm at the start of the season. Read more here.

Burgess’ coaching role?

Former South Sydney Rabbitohs and Super League star Sam Burgess has been backed for a major coaching role, according to the Daily Telegraph.

It comes as the SAS Australia winner takes charge of a bush-level rugby side. Read more here.

Bailey on Hardaker

Leeds Rhinos legend Ryan Bailey has had his own say on the future of former Wigan Warriors star Zak Hardaker.

Hardaker and Wigan agreed to part ways last week, but his future is still unclear. Read more here.

Jon Wilkin and Sam Tomkins were guest pundits in the Sky Sports studio at the weekend where they discussed the future of Tony Smith.
