Halifax Panthers appeal for interested parties after RFL membership revoked and all players declared ‘free agents’

halifax panthers

Halifax Panthers have responded to the RFL ruling that’s seen their membership revoked following the club’s compulsory liquidation.

It was confirmed earlier this week by Fax themselves that they had entered compulsory liquidation after a hearing at the High Court, on account of their financial issues.

Since then, the RFL have now confirmed that the Panthers have had their RFL membership revoked casting huge doubt over the future of rugby league in Halifax.

The Panthers have now shared a club statement on that decision, confirming that it means Sunday’s proposed fixture against Sheffield Eagles has been postponed, whilst all players have become free agents as well.

As we saw with Featherstone Rovers, who entered administration in January and had their RFL membership revoked, players will likely scatter now and sign with other clubs for the 2026 season.

Fax have also released a second statement that has appealed for expressions of interest with a deadline set for February 18th, as the club look to take on backers.

That statement read: “Following recent developments, interested parties are invited to submit Expressions of Interest in relation to the future of Halifax Panthers.

“Expressions of Interest should be sent to: future@halifaxpanthers.co.uk

“Deadline: 18 February 2026

“The Club reserves the right to amend or terminate the process at any time and is under no obligation to accept any proposal”

All of this begs questions as to the future of Halifax Panthers with the club claiming that they had a formal request for special dispensation to allow their membership to continue knocked back.

Halifax Panthers respond after RFL membership revoked

Their full statement in response to the RFL’s decision was posted on the club’s social media channels and can be read below.

“Halifax Panthers are devastated to confirm that, following today’s decision by the Rugby Football League, the Club’s RFL Membership has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

“Despite extensive efforts over recent days — including a formal request for special dispensation to allow our Membership to continue via our current trading company — this was ultimately refused following advice received by the RFL.

“As a result:
-Sunday’s Betfred Championship fixture against Sheffield Eagles has been postponed; and
-Under RFL regulations, all players are now free agents.

“This is an incredibly difficult moment for everyone connected with Halifax Panthers — our players, staff, volunteers, supporters, and the wider community. Behind every decision are real people whose livelihoods and futures are now uncertain, and their welfare is our immediate priority.

“We remain absolutely committed to doing everything possible to safeguard the future of Rugby League in Calderdale and to finding a positive outcome for our club and our community. We ask for patience and compassion at this time as we support our people and work urgently on next steps.”
